In theory, I could build something “similar” in my Zoia rack unit. However, I do like physical controls, and the Zoia only does two-in & two-out audio, so all routing would need to be internal.

The thing I liked about the video demo was the combo of multiple outputs being simultaneously routed to the Jumble Henge (23:16 time stamp). I do have a Henge, so…

the mco is a digital oscillator that you may not like the sound of.

the mcf x2 seems to have a lot of possibilities.

I had the Ibanez EHB with Big Splits, though they are made for Ibanez and not the same as the off the shelf pickups (how much different, I don't know). I liked them a lot...very full range.

Sometimes the process just does not come together. I had a drone in VCV Rack that I thought I'd build from, started patching the Euro gear and building up more parts. Put together what I thought was a clever little polyrhythmic but symmetrical sequence, where I had Akemie's Castle running through Shapeshifter wavetables and it all sounded so neat. Came up with a patch where the Mimeophon was self-oscillating, controlled by MIDI pitch and pressure from the Launchpad X. Made Ears ping a comb filter which I also fed into Mimeophon, which also sounded neat.

Recorded a take, and immediately hated it. It was like a chocolate curry alfredo sauce, none of the parts fit together. And it was pretty boring to listen to, stumbling and falling over without going anywhere.

But this is what I like about working fast and loose... I can throw it away and call it 3 hours of practice and not worry about it being a big waste. Maybe some of the patch ideas will live again in a better recording.

For the past year or two I have been struggling to use bass and effects to produce "electronic" music, partly because bass is my main instrument, and partly because I like the challenge of figuring it out. I have been through the routine you describe over and over. But once in a while, I manage to pull something together that I'm not embarrassed to show.

I love the metaphor. The nice thing is if one plays regularly, there is a lot of space to make things that suck. Crap is the price of culture, or something.

My partner, texting a friend checking in on our Covid situation:

"J has a new synthesizer array at home — lots of bloops and bleeps are happening in the back of the house." (We actually live in an apartment but are from the midwest so home is a "house.")

EDIT: just listened to the new track and really like it! Not nonsense at all. You have "a sound" and "a vibe."

Y' know how I knew my wife was The One For Me when I first met her 30-something years ago? I played her a tape of my band, and she said "This sounds like a bunch of 7-year-olds banging on pots and pans."

To which I said "I know! Cool, right?"

...and she didn't leave me then and there.

It felt like he just woke up from an Ambien nap and someone told him he had an interview with a mystery guest in five minutes. Rick seemed to be tolerating the questions, but not really interested in them.

It’s a brief clip, so maybe there were better moments outside of that.
