Ambient/Post-Rock/Textural bass playing thread

Just spent some time seeing what I could do with modulating Euclidean patterns in my Hapax. Then, the spirit of @Ugly's question, I decided to see what I could do by running those patterns into the Cosmos. Super 6 disappears at about 1:20 and then it's all me twisting knobs and punching in silence on the Cosmos. This is apparently indicative of my bleep bloop "West Coast experimental" phase.



It really is like steering a cat.

In other news, not only have I tested negative, I woke up without a headache today, though I'm still having a bit of insomnia and brain fog. Will continue taking it easy.

It’s funny, I feel like the Octatrack is really the only thing for which I tolerate unlabelled button combos anymore, and that may be because I’ve had it for over a decade.

I kinda think the logic behind navigating the Octatrack ‘makes sense,’ but there are just so many different ways to connect the dots it can be daunting.

Same I still get winded pretty fast and my sense of taste is at tops 30%.

People seem largely over the moon for Xaoc stuff and I love the design aesthetic. I have the Zadar and can’t say I’ve gelled with it. Too many button combos on a tiny interface for my liking.

There aren’t many demos or reviews out there. I’m assuming the price point is a barrier to entry for many. That said, the demos I’ve heard tend to sound excellent and the modules look to have just enough “special features” to make them interesting. Like the VCA with two channels (stereo or dual mono) which has a nice overdrive (with clipping options) and the ability to take two simultaneous CV inputs (one linear, one log). A dual VCA at that price wouldn’t impress me, but with those added features, including ones you can’t easily find elsewhere…

not all patches have it, but try this:

hold a chord in your left hand and press a hight note in your right and then starting pressing harder. if the patch has some pat programmed in it, you should hear a difference. next, if that patch has it programmed, try pressing different notes in a chord with different pressure.

Thanks! For some reason I had it in my head that to trigger it one has to hold the key halfway down, rather than pushing down harder.

Hmm…Digitakt is extremely popular and I think for very good reason. Elektron stuff speaks its own language, but once you learn it, it’s crazy fast and fun. I only sold mine because I like the Octatrack even more. Octatrack is the greatest piece of hardware of all time for me, but if you think the Digitakt is tough to wrap your head around…

One of my buddies is a big fan of his Octatrack, and I'm sure it's super powerful and great - I just struggle to have the patience to figure out the Digitakt.

I once borrowed one for a week and got so frustrated. Just couldn’t grok the darn thing. A couple months later I bought one anyway and am glad I did. Cuckoo, on YouTube did a great in depth tutorial on it. Took awhile, but I kept watching, rewinding and working along side and had it in a couple days

wow. I didn’t know we had two longhaulers on here! That sucks! I am really going to keep taking it easy, plus my doc says to keep isolating.

I’ve been tempted by a guitar. I really don’t need a 6 string.

I have found them useful. I use my acoustic to work out chord patterns sometimes and serenade the cats, and the electric has made it into a few compositions.

A dual VCA at that price wouldn’t impress me, but with those added features, including ones you can’t easily find elsewhere…

That’s the Tallin. I like mine. Can be prone to noise if it’s sharing power with digital modules.

thanks. The Cosmos would play well with the Lyra. I know I’m not helping.

This afternoon I decided to put away my Typhon, which I’ve been finding a bit fiddly, and bring my Norand Mono back out. It doesn’t seem to play well with the Hapax. Wall punching time. I did all the usual troubleshooting and then emailed both companies at once, since both the Mono and the Hapax work with everything else I use, and I checked cables, settings, etc. Frustrating. I don’t discount user error but I’m betting it’s a hidden setting on one, or a tiny bug.

OTOH, I spent some time with just the Mono and was reminded of how fun, deep, and good sound it is. Really brilliantly designed.
