I just picked up another '57 AV P. This one is from '97. This "new" one is black. No chrome covers and no button on the back of the head stock. Why would anyone remove that? It is wearing some pretty light rounds of unknown origin. No silks at all. Overall it is in pretty good shape but not as nice as my '01 Dakota Red.
I am a little bummed that it does not have the raised poles for the A-string. Does anyone know if they always used that type of pickup or am I likely looking at some replacements?

I love my 1994 version of the '62 Jazz RI so much that I had a complete fret dressing done on it. I am cheap, so this was a big deal. Bought it from a TB-er, who had bought it from a TB-er. I imagine I'll own it forever, like my '73 P...

Hey there AV series owners,
What strings are y'all using on these fine basses?
My "new" one ('57 P) has strings of unknown origin. I like them OK but I will not be able to replace them as I've no idea of what they are. No silks and they are lighter than the Fender 7350M stainless rounds that I have on my Dakota Red '57 but that's all I know.
Just looking for some ideas. Maybe DR's? Not sure what kind though.

My VS '62 P bass has a really old set of Lakland Joe Osborne flats on her. Over the last 26 years she's worn:

Fender Studio Bass Flats (that's what they shipped on her)
Fender Studio Bass Rounds
D'Addario XL- nickel rounds- either the 45/65/85/105 set (XL-165) or the 50/70/85/105 set (XL-170 I think)
D'Addario SloWounds also 45/65/85/105
GHS Brite Flats
D'Addario Half Round
D'Addario Prisms (way to bright and twangy for me)
DR Sunbeams
DR HiBeams
LaBella Old Originals (years before they were called "The Jamerson Set")
GHS Boomers
Lakland Stainless

JTE, those D'Addario SloWounds must be pretty old! They haven't made them for awhile. That's all I used to use until I switched to flats several years back. (And they sound great even when they ARE old!)

Most of my basses now wear Chromes.

I purchased like a case of slowounds after they discontinued them! I still have four or five sets, mostly 50,70,85,105 and 45, 65,80,100. I payed like $9 bucks a pack for them. :)
