amp blew a capacitor need help selecting

Nothing new there. I usually try to see what B, Beans, Nashville Bill, or Line 6 have to say. All of them are usually right. B just somehow is right with less words.

Anyhow, I concur with the others, go up in voltage to the 25V, Nichicons or Panasonics are good. Not much $$ going with better specs on these caps so the 105 degree, low ESR would be exactly the ticket here!

By the way, going up in voltage rating WILL increase the life of the cap, every cap manufacturer publishes charts and formulas showing this. If the circuit is 12 V for example, going from a 16V rating to 25V WILL increase the life of the cap even though the voltage was under the 16V cap's rating.

FWIW, I filtered my capacitor spread sheet for 3300 uF and 16/25 volt caps.
Most of the 3300/16 are 12.5mm case diameter.
All the 25v caps are 16mm minimum, a few at 18mm diameter.

I don't track the lead spacing, but would speculate the 25v lead spacing is wider than the 16v board holes.
This presents a problem trying to stuff the wider leads into a more narrow hole.
Think Dolly Parton stuffed into a "B".

I don't see height as a problem on this particular installation.
But, the photos look like side clearance might be tight.
The larger diameter 25v caps might pose a clearance problem also.

Just food for thought, as practical considerations weigh on the theoretical "more is better" justification for a higher voltage cap.

Even these panasonic replacements are a touch wider. I'll start with squeezing dolly into a double c.
 
just get something that matches the capacitance/voltage spec from a reputable manufacturer. This sounds like a power supply cap, so the tolerance isn't particularly important and there's no such thing as Audio Grade.

If you're a worrier, get a tighter tolerance spec but it makes no difference.

There's probably two of them. It would be good to replace both.

Capacitance is key to keep the same, Voltage you can actually go up in value without problems, a lot of times manufacturers keep the tolerences (especially in power supplies for some odd reason) too close to the cusp , putting in a cap with the same microfarad rating and higher voltage is just fine.
 
New caps arrived, same diameter but twice as tall. I'll be throwing these in first and keeping the panasonics as backup. Or if anyone on here wants replacement caps I'll send the panasonic ones to keep the love alive. I'll post the ratings with these new caps as soon as I can, and provide source if they OK it.
 
Ok the terror LIVES AGAIN. I was incorrect in that both caps in the same area are NOT the same. Here's the photo of the replacement (http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg515/bwolfenden/fixer.jpg). The cap in the center, that's taller and black in wrapping, is the replacement. The blue one next to it, with the black dot on top, looks similar but is completely different (250v!). Luckily we caught it. So its just the single cap that goes, the short one. The Orig cap is 12 x 10mm, 16v, 3300uf, -40 to 105c temp rating, made in china. I replaced it with a 12 x 35 mm cap, same ratings as the orig. I had sourced panasonic ones, but they were too big and I didn't want to risk standing exposed leads. A lot of folks will think I should have gone with a higher voltage rating, and I appreciate the variety thoughts and suggestions.

The board is REALLY clear on which side is negative (1/8th of the circle it sits in is colored white, and the caps all have big rectangles on the negative side). Its an easy fix. I'll collect the manufacture date from the serial and post it later. From what I concluded, the cap was too $hort. I couldn't get a rating across the board due to time constraints and bench constraints (was a table in a basement, and not a serious workshop).
 
Sorry for coming to this party a little late, but the same thing happened to me.
Carvin BX500 with blown 1000uf 200v filter cap. Manufactured by CapXon as are all the electrolytics in the BX500..

dedicated to identifying the bad cap manufacturers which includes CapXon. They also list the good, reliable brands.
 
another vote for Panasonic FM or FC series.
I'd also note that in other threads I have read about the Orange Terror bass, users and astute observers have noted the 16v rated capacitor is only a couple volts above the power supply rails. In theory this should work, but in practice it is better to have a good margin. I'd get 25v or 33v capacitors.
If you go to the digikey site (or mouser as well I believe) you can constrain the search variables by volt rating, temp range, and size.
Be sure you pay attention to minimum order though. Some models of capacitor will have min order of couple hundred or more.
