Amp GAS Gone!

I never considered myself an "amp guy." I've always been more into having a lot of basses.

Anyway I got to the point where my gf would likely kill me if i bought another bass, so this past year I did a bunch of buying and selling of amps.

I ended up with a well rounded trio:

Here we have a '87 Gallien- Krueger 800RB, an early Aguilar DB750, and a 1973 Ampeg SVT Blackline.

I have to get a pic of my cabs which are a Bergantino NV610 and an Accugroove Whappo Jr, but between all the amp/cab configurations, I can get a whole lot of different tones.

GAS cured...for now anyway lol

That is a great trio there man! I am the same way....been a out of control bass collector for years but in the past year or so I have switched to going through amps, cabs and preamps and must say that like you I found it very rewarding. Still don't consider myself and "amp guy" but I am way more knowledgeable than I was and have a pretty cool collection....mmmm whats next?

lol The GK has been getting used the most lately because of that, and of course the fact that it sounds great.

The Aguilar isn't horrible to move around though. I have a nice lightweight carry bag for it, and I can carry it with one hand.

The SVT, well, its HEAVY! Especially when its in its road case. I've been meaning to add wheels and a telescoping handle to the case so I can cart it around a little easier. Still, loading it on top of the 6x10 isn't for the faint at heart, or the bad backed, or the weak lol.

Funny enough 9/10 of my local NY gigs usually have a backline provided, so these just stay at home and the practice space.

For out of state stuff, which happens about twice a month, I bring out one of the big guns.

I've been thinking about adding a micro...lol

I had the Aguilar TH500 and a GB Streamliner 900, great heads. If I go out on tour again next year I'll probably pick one up again.

Didn't you sell an Aguilar DB 750 (or 751) earlier this year? I remember keeping my eye on it for a while since I could've easily made the < 1 hour drive to Yonkers to pick it up, but alas, my GAS funding was at a low point at the time.

Nice rigs, but I agree, you need to add a micro. ;)

I sold the 751, I liked the tone from the 750 just a hair more. Both were loaded with a Telefunken tube in V1. The 750 still has one in there.

The SVT does have some wear that you can't seen in the pic. I got it for what I think is a steal though, and it runs like a champ. It's my first all tube amp, and first ampeg. It is true what they say about them, that thing rocks harder than anything else I've played through.

NICE! Really nice amp collection.

I too have the back breakers... a DB750 and a '70 SVT. I love them to death.;) But my third is my Mesa M6. Well I do have a Walkabout too. I, like you, am in tone heaven.

There is just something about an old SVT that sounds so right.

One thing that surprised me was the whole rated watts vs how loud the amp actually is. Where the Aguilar is a LOUD 750 watts, the 300 watt GK and Ampeg have absolutely no problems matching the volume.

..and someone recently posted elsewhere that the 800rb is underpowered. I never was wanting for more volume with the GK.

+1 the SVT is just one beast of an amp in just about every way, tone, size, volume, etc, etc.

If you don't use the boost knob I can see where it can lack a little oomph. I usually have mine up at 12 o'clock. Gives me a nice bit of volume and growl. I am amazed at how loud it gets for only 300 watts. Same goes for the SVT, that thing gets stupid loud.

Thanks Jimmy. The only other thing I would imagine adding to the collection at this point is a B-15. I recorded my bands last album with one and it was just an awesome match with my P-bass.
