Thinking about what's gone on in this thread, it strikes me that one of the problems that misleads folks is the statement of simple rules of thumb. I've been careful not to state any.
It is neither true nor helpful to say that the power-rating of an amp should be greater than, less than, or equal to the power-rating of a cab. Let's put aside the validity of those ratings for now.
Good reasons have been stated here by those posting for, under different circumstances, the desirability of ending up with an amp with a power-rating greater than that of the cab to which it's mated and the desirability of ending up with an amp with a power-rating that is less than that of the cab to which it's mated. No simple rule covers these circumstances.
As I've posted here many times before,
"Think SPL, not watts." I encourage anyone interested to do a search within this forum on that phrase. Some rather enlightening discussion developed.
The optimum choice of the relative power-ratings of an amp and cabinet really stem from a consideration of the sound-pressure level one wishes to achieve, the sensitivity of the cab, and from where one begins in the choice of equipment. I'll assume for the purposes of what follows, that what's desired is clean power and not intentional distortion. That's true for the vast majority of DB players.
Now, suppose one starts with a cabinet rated at 350 watts as the OP of this thread did. What should be the power-rating of the amp that he buys? The first consideration should be the sensitivity of the cab in terms of SPL @ 1meter/watts. (These measures are usually made at 1 kHz so, yes, they may be of limited use, but let's roll with it). Keep in mind that every doubling of watts corresponds to 3 dB and every tenfold increase corresponds to 10 dB. Suppose Cab A is rated at 350 watts and has a sensitivity of 100 dB SPL/watt @ 1 meter. Now suppose Cab B also has a rating of 350 watts but has a sensitivity 90 dB SPL/watt @1 meter. Those are actually realistic values. They are 10 dB apart, meaning that, all other things being equal (e.g., frequency response, excursion limits, etc.), 10x the power will be required to reach a given SPL with Cab B as compared to Cab A. That's right. What a 10-watt amp will do with Cab A will require a 100-watt amp for Cab B. What a 100-watt amp will do with Cab A will a require a 1000-watt amp for Cab B.
Let's take a look at using the 100-, 100- and 1000-watt amps. If we want to generate 110 dB SPL @1 meter, we can do that just fine with Cab A. Just hit it with 10 watts. We'd have to hit Cab B with 100 watts to do that. If we want to generate 120 dB SPL @ 1 meter, we just apply 100 watts to Cab A. No problem, we're well within spec. To do that with Cab B, we'd need 1000 watts. Oops! We'd have smoked it!
With an extremely sensitive cab, one needs less amplifier power. Usually, such cabs are of designs that they can also handle reasonable amounts of power. Take an example from the hi-fi world. A Klispchorn is rated at 106 dB SPL/1 watt @ 1 meter. For decades, people have been running them with low-power amps and done just fine. Still, although they can absorb hundreds of watts and create ear-shattering levels of
musical content easily, the poor horn-loaded tweeters were somewhat sensitive and, in fact, were damaged by running moderately-powered amps into clipping. This led the company to develop a special protection circuit.
So, for someone using those systems and wishing only to generate moderate-to-quite loud levels, a low powered amp would do fine. For those wishing to create higher levels, it was important not to drive the amp into clipping. No simple rule would do.
Getting back to musical sound reinforcement, typical equipment, and the OP, if one starts with a typical cab rated at 350 watts, the choice of an amp really should take into account a number of factors. Given that one already has chosen such a cab and given the sensitivity of typical musical instrumental cabs with such ratings and used for bass, I think it is
typically much wiser to choose an amp rated higher than that of the cab rather than to choose an amp that has a power-rating so low that, if it clips, it won't do damage because the increased average power can be absorbed by the cab. The power would have to be so low as to make the rig not very useful. That's because a 350-watt rating is not all that high in the world in which we live. IMO, in such a case, it would be better to protect against clipping. Your ears will tell you if you're pushing the cab too hard under clean, non-clipped conditions. Is this a rule then that one should always choose an amp with a rating higher than that of the cab? Absolutely not!
As others have pointed out, if one starts with a particular amp, say one rated at 500-watts and knows in advance that conditions will be such that clipping will often occur then, yes, the best choice would be a cab that can absorb the abuse. Is this a rule then that one should always choose a cab with a rating higher than that of the amp? Absolutely not!
This is what I've meant by thinking intelligently about all of this. Simple rules about these things are folly. I think (hope) this is something about which we can all agree.
