Ampeg B-200Rs $280, Shipped

Just wanted to throw my 2 cents in - I ordered an SVT-VR b-stock from them that came just horrifically packed. Very little foam and the amp was able to freely move in the box 2-3 inches in any direction before hitting what packing material there was. It was awfully sad to look in that box and see what hell UPS has brought upon it.

To AMS's credit, they took the amp back with no problems, paying shipping back, and made me a hell of a deal on a new (non b stock) VR to make it right.

So buyer beware, but if it goes wrong, these guys will make an effort to do you right.

Not a bad deal at all, I had one of the first ones a couple of years ago and had to bring it back b/c it blew up when I plugged in for the speaker +tweeter input... and quite a few where doing it as well and having to be returned, it took to long to get a second one so I opted for another (Nemesis) combo. Sometimes I dont care if I can return a piece of gear or not, I dont want the thing blowing up on me and my band during a gig we are getting paid for! There are several posts here regarding the issue. I would for sure buy the new one, as the B-stock my be rebuilds of all the ones that where blowing up a few years ago?? just a thought...

Man, we ALL have these stories! :(

One of the great things about AMS is they ship from a warehouse about 100 miles from me, so I get whatever I ordered the next day and in relatively pristine condition. What wreckage shows up eight or nine days after ordering from Musician's Friend, on the other hand, is usually pretty shocking.

The bad part is that I virtually never find a really attractive deal at AMS. This is the exception and unfortunately I have no need or use for the amp. :(

I'm a little But I've not had any trouble with AMS before, so I don't think I'm risking very much. I'm just looking for good Ampeg tone, and since I don't have the bucks for a flip-top, I think this is worth a shot.

This sounds like a great deal for sure. Brand new, this thing is now $350 which is nearly 50% off what is what just a few months ago. This is obviously being cleared out and discontinued. MF hasn't caught on yet. I imagine they'll be clearing out their stock soon.

Be cautious about AMS's return policy. I bought about 5 different things from them in the last 3 years and returned 3 of them and now I am red flagged and can no longer return any merchandise. If I do, something has to be wrong with the item and I can only exchange it for the same thing. I've returned tons of stuff to MF and have never been flagged down like that. I always carefully unpack and repack merchandise so that is can be resold as new. That kind of ticked me off.

What WAS that, and how did they remedy it?

How come the Yellville builds don't seem to have it?

:confused::confused::confused:

It is the alum chassis vibrating at certain frequencies. I have talked to a couple of helpful people via PM and they have come up with decent ideas on how to resolve it. Thing is, with the one I have, the chassis is pressed into the cab so tight that I am risking ripping the tolex if I remove it to tighten the bolts inside (speaker).

Being that mine is brand new, I am going to swap it out for another and see what happens.

I honestly hope that my problem is not common, since the amp sounds great and it would great to see others get a slammin' deal.

What risk? If it's bad it goes back at their expense.

You're out nothing. :hmm:
...
Well, you are right about that; however, I had to return a B-stock to MF and then just upgraded to a NIB ("New-in-the-Box" for you new kids) B-100R. It showed up with a broken knob; back it went. 3rd amp (2nd "new" one) showed up with 4 broken knobs!
So yeah, it just goes back at their expense...but how long to you want to wait to have a good, working amp?
Sure my experience may be extraordinary...but who knows...maybe not.
Nothing is risk free, and having used and heard the B-100R (not the 200), I would definitely recommend the B-100R and say it's worth the hassel.
Just realize that there is risk no matter what you buy or where. Still...for that kind of trouble, I don't want a B-stock. There's a reason it's B-stock and it ain't cause "B" stands for "better".

Personally, though, I'd spring for the extra $20 for a new one with free extended warranty. At that price it just seems prudent, particularly with the likelihood of that extremely fragile diamond vinyl being chewed up on a B.

But I'm going to pass. I have a B-100R sitting here on top of an SWR Black Beauty, two nice 1x15 combos I never use, so I hardly have a purpose to get another one.

Still, I'm really curious as to how a simple vibration problem has caused so much grief with these.

Mainly because after watching my friend hassle with sending three of them back, I really don't want the bother. I fully realize that the return shipping is at their expense, but it's just nothing I want to bother with if it's gonna be nothing but headaches.

Same with me. I kept a lot more than I returned but one time that I ordered online they gave me a call & said that I would not be able to return the item unless it was to exchange for the same item. :scowl:

I dunno. It sounds isolated to me.

I buy a lot of gear.

I've experienced all the horror stories and many that outstrip anything I've ever read here from anyone else.

I've also had customer service people at MF tell me about known problems with B and scratch and dent items, like there only being two left, so you keep getting the same destroyed one back over and over. :rollno: This actually happens sometimes until someone intervenes and sends the junker to the MF outlet store and clears the inventory.

More frequently, I have had bad S&D stuff upgraded to a new replacement at no cost, etc.

Nothing is risk free
This is pretty close. You're only out the nuisance.

They e-mail you a shipping label which you print and put on the box. There's a UPS store right next to my local Guitar Center, so I dump it and go look at other gear. [shrug]

having used and heard the B-100R (not the 200)
Remember, they are substantially different amps that look similar.
I don't want a B-stock. There's a reason it's B-stock and it ain't cause "B" stands for "better".
B-stocks are usually fine and I prefer them to scratch and dent, though there is often overlap in these stocks.

B-stock is often nothing more than a rectification of a bad production run recall or a circuit upgrade -- you can usually tell this happened when there are huge numbers of a certain single item in B-stock with several retailers. A board component was reversed or something..they went back, got fixed and re-shipped. I'm assuming this is exactly what happened with these B-200Rs. They had a known production problem right out of the box and massive numbers went back for remedial work on an exchange-warranty basis.

LOTS of B-stock items are in fact sold as scratch and dent, which are putatively returned or damaged merchandise, as the manufacturers (I can think of a BIG one offhand) publicly maintain that they never have sold seconds...which in fact is a baldfaced lie. ;) They do it all the time.

Anyway, I got a B-stock BBE rack unit for $51 from MF last week. There were apparently *thousands* of this one item, which appears to be the bad production run thing. It looked 100% new with all the original box and junk, but very close inspection indicated that it had been re-opened despite appearing to have never actually been used. :hmm:

Works fine. [shrug]

Actually they sound pretty much the same. The B200r has some more high end (I was using the tweeter) and was a bit punchier, but I could just eq/turn up the B100r to get close. The B200r has more power and should be loud enough for most situations however.

I boxed mine back up last night and have to use Fed Ex to return.

The first comment on it was hilarious (Though I had a chance to play through one recently, didn't experience this):

Subject: Turd Box

Quality: My B200R has the VERY COMMON rattling issue going on full-tilt. Chassis looks like it was crammed into the frame by an overzealous lumberjack - it's all bent up. Took it apart - which was extremely difficult - and found NO SHIELDING and saw what a real piece of crap this thing is.

Features: Makes a great, sylish cat liter box if you hollow it out.

Sound: When it's bearable to play through, the tone is kinda sweet. However, the buzzing, rattling and random bursts of static tend to overpower that tone.

Playability and Feel: This isn't a guitar, so I think this question is irrelevant.

Tone: Like I stated, if not for all of the amp's problems, the tone is sweet with nice EQ-shaping options.

Finish: Overall decent but upon closer examination it's obvious that this thing was literally THROWN TOGETHER.

Action: Action? This is another guitar question.

Do you own this product?: Yes, unfortunately

Mine arrived today. Delivered upside down in a beat-up box dumped on my porch, by my friends at brown. Mine shipped out of NJ. I was hesitant to plug it in considering the rough ride it had.:crying:

This is my B Stock B200R:

Well the tolex is fine.
No casters were included (thought some people had casters)
Not as heavy feeling as I feared.
There is evidence that this may have been opened, one corner of the head, just above the space where the cord is has a small bend in the metal, like someone lifted the corner with a screwdriver and it bent slightly.
I downloaded and read the manual from Ampeg before I did anything, the manual was not included, nor was any registration info.:scowl:
2 of the corner protectors have bearly noticable dents in them, probably a gift from UPS. I can't get too hot about that though, the box had no "this end up", or "fragile" info to tell them otherwise.

That's the extent of damage. It looks sharp, really. Still has the protective plastic over the front of the head too.:)

Sound check. I put it through the paces with active and passive basses, going into the appropriate input....if you were interest in this amp for "that" sound, well yeah, it has "the sound".

Does it rattle, you say?
Nope I cranked it up several times. My house rattled. Dishes in the kitchen cabinets rattled. Windows rattled. Stuff fell out of the ceiling fan. My dog ran away. My cat jumped on top of it. The amp sounded like it should. No rattles or weird buzzing. Just good tone.

What about the horn/no horn fuse blowing problem, says you?
I was nervous doing this, because I really liked it with the horn first of all, and could be quite content playing it that way. And secondly, I didn't have total confidence that mine was fixed. It could have been missed, I thought. It is one of the China imports, so the problem is potentially there, I thought. I then reminded myself that I would be better off to find out now so I can send it back if necessary. I turned it off before changeing over. Turned it back on. No problem!!:D Played for awhile, then turned it off, and changed it back. No Problem!!:hyper:

So the verdict for mine is, "turd box"??
Nay,fellow feline lovers! Not a turd box, but a big blue box of tone, and soul with enough volume for most old school rockers to inflict the required doomage upon an unsuspecting public. :bassist:

At this price, mine is a monsterous deal.

I wish everyone else the same good fortune!

Glad it worked out for you!

At the moment I'm upset at AMS for lying about price matching (as does every other online retailer who claims to do it).

I especially like this moronic response:
=======================================
Subject: Price Match Approved

Thank you for shopping at American Musical Supply, and thanks for helping us keep our promise of delivering outstanding customer service and everyday low prices!

We are not able to match the price you sent us
========================================

"Price Match Approved"??? But no, and they counteroffered me a price less than $2 more that the price they wouldn't match...but announced in the subject field that they did.

What utter, brain-dead dirtbags! Creating that much ill-will over about a buck-eighty. :rollno:

And what?:scowl:
That's just bizarre.
:eyebrow:

Glad it worked out. I was thinking that a B stock may be the way to go since if it was returned for buzzing in the first place it may be remedied.

Try a C or C# just to make sure.

Thanks!

That's probably true about the B Stock.

I played active & passive basses, fretted & fretless....& so far it's solid.

Awesome...I really like the tone of the amp. I will keep my fingers crossed that B200r #2 is a ok.

Mine came with the casters in cardboard which was flipped over. I wonder if Ampeg will send you the casters?

Thanks!

I double-checked the box, so definitely no casters. Good idea. I emailed Dino, and asked. Since it's a holiday weekend I won't fault them if it's next week before I get an answer. Especially since Dino has been pretty cool about answering emails in the past, I'm sure I'll hear something.
