Ampeg cabs?

I was thinking of buying a 6x10 mesa boogie cab, but after researching a bit more i saw that Ampeg cab's are much cheaper so i've changed my sites onto Ampeg. Im thinking of a 610 but because of the difference in the price maybe even the 810. Anyone have any experience with either of those? And how are Ampeg cabs in general?

Thanks :]

So many threads on this but here sthe short. Ampegs have a very muddy sound, and dont register highs well. The 6x10 sounds muddier than the 8x10 because it is ported. The 8x10 has a smoother sound, and better in most peoples opinions.

Slight correction..Ampegs from 2001 till now have a muddy sound. But I love older ones. They don't handle as much power, but they do give you a true 5k response, which Ampeg claims they still do but they don't. More like 2k if you ask me.

If I were buying new, I'd be looking at the Bergantino NV610 before any of them. But it's super expensive new. Also, Aguilar makes an 810 that's catching on with former Ampeg users as well, though I have no idea what it costs. And if you're patient, you can find people offing older 810's for extremely cheap just to get rid of them and reclaim the space in their house.

Yeah usually at 550+ i got my 8x10 for 350. but that was an anomaly.

I have seen the bergs go up for 600 dollars. though.
and jimmy the aguilars are about 1,500 when everything is said and done, totally killed my gas for one haha

Play one and see if you like it. I have a newer one w/ no complaints except the tolex looks like it got hit by an IED.
I went 8x10. I think it's a better cab for not much more money.
If I bought another cab, I'd buy another Aggie 4x12 personally. Killer cabs.

ime: i run two svt 810's and am about to acquire a 610. both of my cabs are newer models and they work fine i wouldnt by any means say they are muddy. In comparison to the broad range of cabs that are out there i would rate the 810 at about an 8 out of 10 and that's operating one or both they sound great. however i have to say that if you are going to consider a purchase of that size i cant see how it would be wise to settle for your next best choice ive used mesas before and they're great too go with the cabs you really want a few hundred bucks wont matter in the long run.

I own a couple two year old 1x15 Ampeg cabs that are clear as a bell without mud.
Tweeters. And let's not forget that mud is subjective. I think the 410HLF is possibly the muddiest cab ever made, but other people think of them as one of the best sounding cabs ever made because they have a giant bottom end, not much mid, and a loud tweeter.

My SVT115e "Classic" cabs don't have tweeters. They are full range cabs and voiced great in a band mix, IMHO.
