Ampeg PF-350 Mega-Thread, V2.0

If they have designed the cabinets internal volume to work with the particular driver in the cab the extra volume of the head being inside the cab will decrease the internal volume which could cause problems with tone and the way the speaker behaves

That tiny head isn't large enough to alter the Qtc of the cabinet in any appreciable way.

I just purchased a PF350 and hooked it up to my old Genz Benz 2x15 cab. Great tone but I don't seem to get a good amount of volume unless the gain is set to at least halfway. I might try to switch it out for the PF500; it's a whole lot of power for only about 100 bucks more.

I run the Gain on my PF350 between 2 and 3 o'clock. To my ears, that setting gives it a nice punch with the right amount of "edge".

Well you have to remember that it doesn't quite sell in numbers like the PF500. I only got one because it had the Micro VR preamp which I love and I didn't need the features of the PF500.

I recently changed the port tuning of my 1X15 cab, with which I use my PF-350. Shortened the port tubes. Raised the tuning freq. Increasing the power handling. Raised the freq. where farting begins. Reducing the boominess of the cab. Result is that I now turn up the gain on the PF-350 to 2 o'clock. Master volume is around the same. Used to be around 1 o'clock on the gain and master. A noticeable increase in volume! I really haven't yet turned it up to the fart point, so I don't know exactly where that is now. I haven't needed to turn up that much. The rig is scrambling my innards as is. The band is saying they can hear me, just fine. The PF-350 is working pretty good.

Personally, when I demoed them, I preferred the simpler EQ section on the PF 350. Not that the PF 500's difficult to understand or anything, it's just a tiny bit more complicated than the PF 350. You have to wonder if they will continue to built all three PF heads, now that they have the PF 800.

Very cool. What cab are you using nick?

It's a DIY with just the CB15 in it. 4.0 cu ft. 2X3in flared ports which are now 2in effective length. Herculiner covering. Here's the pics. I've been using this cab with the PF-350 since last October. It's been plenty for all the sm./med. indoor stuff I've done. I'm building a fEARful 15/6 for larger indoor, and outdoor gigs.

....how is the fan noise on this PF 350?.......

Well, when I see the larger number of postings cheering for the PF-500 compared to the number of postings exalting the PF-350, I'd say the PF-350 'fan' noise is way too quiet. IMHO :D

In seriousness, I don't recall ever being disturbed by the cooling fan on my PF-350.

Regarding the gain knob, I agree that it just starts to wake up the great tones starting around the 1 o'clock setting. More is better.

Why, that cab is bigger than an HHR!!!! :D.

JFTR, I am now running my Head through the PF115he plus a PF115lf (when I need more air) and it sounds awesome.

JimmyM and I were over in the 350/500 thread talking about the drivers in the HE and wondering what the ohms ratings were and if the 15" was the same in the LF; both the horn and the 15 in the HE are 8 ohms. So I guess the LF uses the exact same driver purple and all. I get a kick outta that purple driver every time I open the HE up. 8)

I've had my pf-350 for a few days and its running thru a Genz Benz Focus 115. Great paring. The Genz cab doesn't flinch one bit when I hit 2 o'clock on gain and volume bass at 3 o'clock. Still trying to feel out both and how they work together. I do notice the pf-350 goes from clean to crunchy around 2-3 o'clock. Its really impressive how it just switches up.

I'd been playing mine through a classic SVT 410 HLF, and it sounded absolutely wonderful. Really the perfect rig for me; just a dream.

Unfortunately, I have been forced to let the cab go due to some financial stress, much like a beloved MIA Jazz I had a few years ago.

A few months down the road I hope to buy a new cab. I am looking at a smaller and a little bit less expensive alternative to the 410 as that was too big for either one of our cars. I'm playing a little bit quieter music these days, and I really need to look after my back.

I really don't like the look of the matching portaflex cabs; I much prefer the traditional SVT style cabs with the black cloth and small corner logo. I was thinking about one of those new SVT 112s, which have a short but wide profile which I kind of like.

I'm looking for a sale on the 210av as well. It looks like the perfect portable practice cab. I've got an avatar tb153 that comes in at 48lbs, and the 26lbs of the 210av is very appealing. Keep us posted if you see anything. I'm expecting guitar center to have an end of year sale or coupon for 15% off again.
