Ampeg PF350/500 Part V

The more I think about this.........I wonder if this was a power issue. I use a Monster Cable conditioner that I love........and it seems to solve the power issues I had at some clubs in the past.

Gigs this weekend...........and actually thinking of taking both cabs out.

Here is the one problem I have with stacking.......you tend to only hear the top cab.........that's why I always loved the logic that GK had on their 800 RB, it would pumb 300 W into the bottom cab, and only 100 in their top cab.

Bass is a weird beast...........on stage if you're near your amp the sound just goes past you...........stand 10 feet away & the amp sounds great. Sometimes I think putting the amp on the other side..........and piss off the guitar player! LOL

That's what I've been doing lately. Put my cab under the guitar amp with the bass head near me. I can hear myself and get a general sense of balance I could never get before. I've had more than one person say they loved the sound set up this way. The guitar gets more of himself in his own ear and the bass shoots past him, so I get a realistic perspective on how things are really balancing and the guitar thinks it is all about him as the dominant sound.

Hello Everyone,

I currently own the PF500 and I have a question regarding output. I have a GK 410MBX and it works just great. However, I purchased a Gk 115MBX yesterday(on its way). I would like to know if I made a mistake or if my Ampeg can push this stack. The 410MBX handles 400w @ 8Ohms and the 115MBX handles 200w @ 8Ohms. I know that I should have asked first but the 115mbx was on sale and I could not pass it up. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

the general consensus seems to be that mixing 1x15s with 4x10s is not ideal - do a search on mixing drivers and you will find hours of reading on the subject.

The potential problem (imho) with your set up is that it will make it hard to 'hear' if the 1x15 is straining because the 4x10 will be louder....theoretically each cab will be receiving 250W - 50W more than you cab is rated for....normally the advice would be to use your ears, common sense and volume knob....but if the 4x10 drowns out the 15, you could potentially push the 15 too far without hearing the normal warning signs...

I agree with pudgychef but will add that the single 15 would be a good cab for times when you need a smaller rig. Just make sure to let your "ear " be the judge as to whether the PF500 is too much for the 15 to handle. You should be fine if you are sensible about cranking it up.

Thank you. I will definitely keep that in mind. I haven't starting gigging yet (I do not think that I am ready - some of my friends do but I do not...close). I will run it in my house and see if there are adjustments that I can make. Would there be a way to run an amp to each cab (sounds stupid but I had to throw it out there). I'd appreciate your take on this. Again, thanks.

You can use the preamp line out on the 500 to the front end input of another amp to drive the 15. Same rules apply though If the cabs are stacked You still might hear the 410 more. If you patch to the input of the second amp you could then use the volume controls of each amp to balance the cabinets volumes.
PS There's no such thing as a stupid question.
That's how we all learn.

Start playing out as soon as you can. That's the best way to improve as a bassist and a musician. There is no substitute for playing live with other musicians. Getting deep in the pocket with a drummer is a beautiful thing. :-)

Thanks for the knowledge. I see what you are saying about the preamp and such but wouldn't such a hook up allow for the manipulation of volume? Thanks for the advice about playing out. You are absolutely right but I think that I am going to practice for another month or two before I get together with my friend to practice for playing in a church environment (he plays guitar). After that I can jump full bore into gigging which is why I am putting together a decent rig. :bassist:

Hi! I ordered a PF-115HE cab from American Musical to go with my PF-350. Sounds very good. Not too loud, but I care more about the tone this rig produces vs just how loud it gets.

Since at some point I may order another cab for more speaker area and to raise one cab for better hearing when standing, I gotta ask:

Is anyone running the PF-115HE with the 210? How do you like that? Which one goes on top? What would a pairing like that give you, vs adding another 15?

Right now I'm running a Hartke 15 under the 210 and it sounds awesome. The 210 sounds alright by itself but it doesn't handle the lows as well as the 15. Very soon I will either be looking to add the Ampeg 15 or purchase a new cab altogether.

I have both. I think they sound fine together. I have the 210 on top. There is a subtle difference between the two.

What I like about having the 2 different cabs is the flexibility of choosing between the two cabs when I only need one. If I need both I'm good to go as well. I find myself using the 115 most of the time lately.

My recommendation is if you are really happy with the tone you are getting and just need more of it then go with the matching cabs. You know what you are going to get

If you are looking for a little more variety (again subtle but its there) go for the other. Buy from a place with a good return policy so if it its not your thing you can exchange it.
