Ampeg PF500/350, part 4

Greg, a small correction...the PF series stuff has only been out for a year.

My mistake. When people were talking about dating Ampegs in this thread and they wrote 08=A, 09=B, etc, I thought they meant the PF series. I hope it doesn't take away from my question to them too much. I think they will still understand my meaning. I appreciate your correction because I don't want to be giving out wrong information.

Is anyone running one of these with an 810? I'm just curious how it stands up?

My post #607 from a few pages back:

My son and I played the PF500 through one PF115 with no issues. When he got his 8x10 fridge, a 4-ohm load, the head started cutting out. Replacement is on its way.

**EDIT (for anyone doing a search and finding this post before my update below)**:
Now that he is using my PF500 (six months newer), my son has had zero problems playing through his 4-ohm 810.

Eh, nothing to worry about, bro ;) I'm sure they realize that not everyone follows their gear timelines like I do.

I have used mine with my flatback 8x10. Sounds pretty decent. Not equivalent to my SVT in anyway but pretty good. I usually use it with either a big bertha 2x15 or a B25B 2x15 for rehearsals or sometimes with a PF-210 and my double baffle B15 cab. Either way, I almost always run it with a 4 ohm load. Not sure if you were the one asking this question, but it's fine with all those cabs and fine with the 4 ohm load.

I don't see any venue I would be playing (even with a loud drummer) where I would need more than the PF500 and 2 PF115HE cabs. I "wanted" a 4ohm PF410 cab because I like 10's better. However this setup is one of my favorite I have owned for overall sound. I have owned Markbass, Genz, Trace, Ampeg, Peavey, Carvin, etc. I would be easier to name what I haven't owned lol. Literally tons of gear over the years.

Sorry - I should have added that, now that he is using my PF500 (six months newer), my son has had zero problems playing through his 4-ohm 810.

Okay, this makes me feel better. I really want to run this setup, as the money is great. 810s are easy to move around, but I don't want to deal with the weight of the SVT-CL. My other option is an Orange Bass terror, so I'm considering that, too..

Took the Repaired PF500 out last night for a gig - ran through Avatar 410 (4 ohm)

It still isn't quite right. Cut out twice early on and at lower volume than normal gig volume.

Each time, it was only for 1-2 seconds - and might have actually done it more - I am not 100% on that. I wasn't sure I was hearing it correctly when it cut out the first time I am certain it did. The second time, was kind of the same. I figured at that point - I wouldn't baby it and ran it at levels I would normally run. it seemed to handle things better the rest of the night. I can't quite figure that out -I don't trust it.

called ampeg today - they will be sending me a replacement - I will send the old one back. I guess that is great, but I would really like to know what the actual fault is. they told me they probably won't figure it out- so.........

In the meantime, I will drive it like I stole it, but with backup available. Just to see if I can re-create the issue. I couldn't last night.

So.......set phasers to stun.........and run with it!

Sorry you are having so many problems, that sucks. I'm wondering have you tried it with another cab? I've noticed cutting out issues when using Avatar cabs have been mentioned in these threads going all the way back to the very first thread. Sometimes wonder if these heads don't like 4 ohm Avatars.

I can relate to the "trust " issue having been there once before with a guitar amp. I never could get comfortable with it after it crapped out twice. Sucked as it was a name brand amp. I was always thinking "when is it going to die again "? I sold it after it got fixed the second time. I felt I couldn't trust it.

I hope your replacement works out because these are nice sounding heads when they are working right.

Good luck.

Jimmy, got the replacement for my PF 350 that was cutting out. This one is a completely different animal! Sounds much better and couldn't force it to cut out at all! Great output out of this little head! Cross my fingers and hope I have no problems down the road. Thanks

I was pretty gun-shy when I first got mine replaced too. Kept waiting for it to fail or have a problem too, but it's been rock solid.

Sweet! Hope you have fun with it!

My situation exactly (with the exception of the Carvin). I love this rig. I still have my Shuttle for small gigs or jazz gigs, but the Ampeg is my favourite.

I am curious about the age of the heads that have been cutting out. I just got mine last moth and have had no problems, but then again, I only have the PF210 cab to play through. Would really like to get a PF410 but really have absolutely no need for one at this point.
