Ampeg PF500/PF350 - part 3, I think

While I'm here, I thought I'd report back on my PF500 "cutting out" issue. I originally posted about my lowest notes overloading the amp and being replaced by a transient "PFFT" sound while the amp was warming up (until about 5 minutes after turning it on). After fiddling with numerous variables (gain staging, basses, cables, etc) and a week of emailing back and forth with Ampeg level 2 tech support, they are sending me a new unit. Normally I'd be a little shy of a brand new amp giving me headache out of the box, but Ampeg's A+ customer service and minimal complaints from the TB community kept me on board!

My replacement is on back-order, but at least I can rest assured that I'll be receiving a new unit directly from the factory! :)

Apparently, the picture at the top is a prototype of the 115 that accidentally ended up on the Musicians Friend website. They've never bothered to take it down. Jimmy says that when they tested the ported box out and compared it to the sealed version everyone liked the (infinite baffle?) closed box, so Loud went with that.

I actually reported that secondhand from Tom Bowlus, who was at the NAMM show where they brought both. I totally see why everyone went with sealed, too. It goes even lower than the original double baffle cabs, more like a Thiele cab. So no need to port it to go even lower.

and all of your stuff will fall out onto the floor if it were ported :)

It does seem like bass players are some of the best free QA out there...you would think at least one person who works at MF and plays bass would have noticed the picture and sent it to HQ for the correction...it's been out long enough for me to notice...

I bought mine used from GC, and the unit died on me after about a month of use. It went into fault mode and wouldn't come out. When I asked GC if the problem would be covered under the original warranty - they said I could try calling Ampeg's customer service number, but GC wouldn't do anything with it since it was used. I called Ampeg, explained what had happened, and they took care of it right away by sending me a replacement. :) It took a while to receive because they were on back order, but the new PF arrived yesterday and is working fine so far.

Thanks for standing behind your product Ampeg! :D

Hah! You must have missed the second, third, and fourth waters where their customer service spiraled down to the worst in the industry, literally closing all their repair centers and cancelling all of their authorized service contracts. It's only in the last year or so that they turned it around!

Don't worry Jimmy, I'm not saying anything negative about how they are today. :)

Yes, I'm fully aware of their issues in the not-too-distant past, but I was talking about the current state of affairs.

When I tried that, it said Ampeg had opted out of any discount codes. Not to worry though, I went with a GK MB200. I preferred the tone over the Ampeg. The Ampeg was great but the GK was better for me.

Better not ;) The process of building it back started in late 2008, though, when they fired the former head dunce. Once they got rid of him and hired a guy who actually respects engineering, it got a lot better.

First time plugging in both PF115's was tonight on my gig...it was quite awesome. Man, you double these cabs up, they really get the job done. It continues to amaze me how deep they go even though they're sealed and not real big. Took me a couple songs to get used to it and get the EQ right for the room, but once I did, I really dug that extra low end.
