Ampeg PF500/PF350 - part 3, I think

That's why I hardly ever use one. In the studio is fine but just never live for me. I've used it a tiny bit on my 500 just to see how it works but most of the time I keep it off. Ymmv

I shared that philosophy for quite a while... I had a compressor on my board when I switched over to multi-effects "because I thought I should." After taking it off about a year and a half ago at the suggestion from a couple fellow TB'ers, I haven't thought twice about it.

However, I DO use the compressor on the PF500... I've noticed that at higher volumes (particularly with a 5-string), the PF115 needs it to keep the speaker from getting too far out of line. At lower volumes I'll set it at 9:00-10:00, but at higher volumes I'll go up to about 12:00 with it.

am looking at PF500 + 610HLF to buy end of january..

any advice or experience with this combination??
i havent tried it yet, but i love the ampeg tone. im friends with the guy at the shop, going to organise a proper test out after hours in the next few weeks. be good to get ur guys comments before doing so.

You can, and Juan Alderete liked it on his Mars Volta tour opening for Soundgarden this summer. But me, I'm a firm believer in using matching cabs. The idea that 10"s do something that 15"s can't do and vice versa is what's known as "engineering by looks." And the PF210 and PF115 sound so similar that I don't see any reason to mix cabs and risk introducing phasing issues if you don't have to.

The short explanation is that different speakers will have different phase responses, which means that combining identical speakers ideally reinforces the sound evenly across the entire spectrum. Combining different speakers can lead to unwanted cancellations or resonances of some frequencies.

The different PF cabs supposedly play nice together, but matching speakers is usually a safer bet.

Exactly. Like some notes will pop out really loud in a mix and some notes will disappear. Bass players have enough of that kind of crap to deal with without adding to it with their rigs.

Hi guys,
Just wanted to get some feedback/opinions on how everyone thinks the Pf 500/Pf 210 combination would sound paired with aMarkbass traveller 102p cabinet. I have a NYE gig with my 6 piece band and need to use another one of my cabs. My other choice would be an Avatar B212neo cab. I plan to get another PF 210, just don't have the cash right now. Thanks for any opinions.

I'd try them both and pick whichever sounds best to you. For a couple months, I was stacking a B-15 cab under a Markbass 121p mini combo and it wasn't horrible, just not perfect like using two B-15 cabs. The voicings are quite different, with the PF210 being a little more even and the Markbass having a big upper mid bump, but it could work.

Thanks Jimmy, appreciate the feedback. I have tried both in my basement, but of course I know it will be different with the band...lenaing towards the markbass cab.

Just got my PF-350 and DB112. :hyper:

Haven't been able to crank it yet, but I'm digging the sound so far!

I searched the forums and saw a few examples...but what are you guys carrying the PF500 around in (other than the fliptop :rollno: )? It barely fits in the laptop bag I had with no cushion to speak of.....so i found this Genz Benz Shuttlemax Bag w similar dimensions at American Musical (cheapest) for $29.71

I bought a PF500 at MF for $349 to pair with my Avatar neo 210; thought the 350 would do the job and I did like its portability and simplicity, but I needed the tuner out and a reliable XLR. I plan on eventually getting a PF cab, but love the Avatars; also wondering what to carry it in...looks like a good fit in a computer bag for the time being.

I have my PF-500 in an old laptop bag. Fits perfectly. The bag is slightly padded and has pockets for cables, etc on the outside plus a padded shoulder strap. It also came with some side padding that was supposed to be used to adjust for smaller laptops and that stuff fits perfectly across the front panel of the amp to protect the knobs.

+1 to a laptop bag.

I've got my PF500 mounted to a PF115, but that's what I use for my Shuttle. Fits great, padded and the extra storage is awesome. I can fit my Shuttle, two 6' speakon cables, earplugs, power cable, pens/pencils/highlighters, etc.
