Ampeg PF800 tech questions

I have a PF800 that likes to go into fault mode.

Stupid questions.

What would it do to the amp if I used it as a preamp only?
I've noticed that when it shuts down it kills the output to the speakers but the DI still works.
Will it do any more damage to the amp if I were to take it out live, hooked to a power amp or will it not shut down if i don't connect a load to it?
Yes I have other amps but the Ampeg sound....
