Ampeg Question

Hi guys,
Awesome question and awesome info!
Thanks you!
May I ask hence does that also mean a SVT III (non pro) also sounds like 1st ch of a vintage SVT as far as the pre amp section goes?
Also where does the V4-B reside sonically?

I have both the II and III non-pro versions (1989 models). When compared side-by-side, the III really does sound a lot like the II, just with noticeably less volume and '3D fullness' (thanks to the II's 6 power tubes). It's really hard to describe in words.

The volume set at noon on the II roughly equals 3/4 volume on the III in my comparisons. The III really is an under appreciated amp in that has some things that set it apart. There's a dedicated wireless jack in the back, defeat limiter, and the DI has a separate level control, none of which are on the II built the same year.

The III is half the height and weight so you can carry it in a 4u rack with 2 other components. I have the II in its own 4u which is about 80lbs and use another 4u for other stuff. The III has the same preamp and can bought fairly cheap if one actually comes on the market (which is rare).

Additionally, I think automatically expecting high maintenance on the II (or all-tube SVTs in general) is a myth. In my experience lugging the II to about 80-100 shows a year, I've had zero reliability issues.

Hi neckdive, thanks for the info. I really dig the sound of the SVT III. I snapped mine up as soon as I came across the opportunity. I’ve actually owned many III pros and they’re are great amps but the non pro has a mojo of its own.
It’s a bit noisy not sure if it may need the tubes replaced as it’s picking up some radio as well lol.
She’s a keeper though.
