Ampeg SGT-DI

Did you compare the B15 model in the Ampeg suite with the Brainworx B-15N? Which one do you prefer? Do they sound alike or is there a big difference?

The SVT Suite does not include a B15 model. It has the Heritage 50th Anniversary SVT, the Heritage SVT-CL, and the SVT 4Pro. On top of those, you get an assortment of cabinet and mic choices and five of their pedals. Again, for $75 it's a bargain if you DIY record and love the Ampeg tone.

I love the Brainworx B-15N plugin from Plugin Alliance. If I was allowed only one amp plugin this would probably be the one, but I'm glad I'm allowed more. You can review it for 14 days at no charge, but for a measly $39, I'd buy both!

I already have the Brainworx one for a while. Love it! Just was wandering how it compared to the SVT, but didn’t know it didn’t have the B15 model. I bought the Brainworx Gallien Krueger 800GK model yesterday.

Hi! Following this thread with great interest. Unfortunately here in Europe, at my retailer, it will be available in 4-6 weeks from now... meh. Love my SCR-DI, but the SGT-DI improves exactly what I would want... except for one thing. Or maybe? I would love an FX loop sent/ return on it for the modulation pedals on my board. The SGT-DI does not have this, it has however a Thru port. My question is: what is the purpose of the Thru port? Ampeg says "adding a tuner", but why, and where does the return cable from the tuner go then, directly into a power amp? Back to the SGT-DI? And does it make sense to add other FX to this Thru port? Would love to get some insight in this. Thanks in advance!

But if you want to talk about future proof, nothing is future proof except death and taxes.
Death sounds like the complete opposite of future proof.
I can't imagine a company like Ampeg (or really any in this day and age) making the power supply completely proprietary.
Oh, I don't know. I could see Apple doing that.
Please someone post a comparison with the SCR-DI
Yeah, I'd love that. The two places I play regularly have both had great PAs for a couple of years now, so the SCR-DI is my gig rig. The PF-500 and 410-HLF mostly stay in the rehearsal space. I could see myself upgrading from the SCR-DI to the SGT-DI. Maybe even keep the SCR as "backup".

But I'd like to see a direct comparison video, specifically scrambler vs. grit, and the quality of the SGT compressor.

Another purpose of the THRU output can be connecting a stage amp. This stage amp would then be completely independent from the sound/volume from the DI that can go to FOH. That is how I use my SansAmp, it is for FOH only.

The Thru connection is an unaffected copy of the signal. Using it for a tuner doesn't require a return since the tuner only has to receive to do its job. This is for people who don't want the tuner in their signal path affecting their tone. Which is weird to me since most people seem to like having the tuner in the signal path to act as a mute.

Alternatively, you could use the Thru connection to split your signal. Adding effects to the separate signal path which you could then combine back in with your primary signal using something like a Boss LS-2. But if you have a setup with that much complexity it would be less expensive, in the long run, to go with a high end multi effects pedal. Like an HX Stomp.

the block diagram shows that the SGT circuit is post the SVT-B-15 voicing so it should change the voicing whether the SGT circuit is on or off:

Super helpful - thank you!

What I'm also liking is the aux-in (either mono or stereo) which can be taken directly to the PA via 1/4" line out / headphone jack. Given that this unit is likely to be at the end of many of our signal chains anyway, to make use of the XLR out, that could be very handy in terms of not having the aux in impacted by the preamp or the preceding pedal chain on your board before the SVT-DI. Particularly useful if you've got something like a Beat Buddy drum machine on your board.

I was landing on pretty much the same thinking for providing an fx-loop with an AB-Y pedal. My concern was that could potentially give rise to a horrible feedback loop though - but thinking it through further that was because I was using AB-Y to combine the parallel fx pedals with the input from the bass back into the SVT input - whereas you are suggesting something different.

Only reason for a effectsloop for me would be to add a compressor pedal after de SGT dirt circuit so the compressor will not mess up the touch sensitivity of the SGT circuit.
Thats where in the chain the internal compressor is as wel, and although i have to try it first, i suspect a 1 knob compressor isn't gonna do it for me.

On most units like this aux in only goes to the headphones. Does this one go uncolored through to the xlr?

Also useful for direct recording in order to track a clean signal while capturing your affected signal. I often do that using the two outputs of my TU-3 but this is a nice improvement

Aux only gets fed to the line out/phones ¼” jack; it does not get fed to the DI/XLR out. So, in a setup like mine, where I use the line out/phones jack > Khan DI > FOH (or wherever), yes the aux would get passed through. I’m not using the preamp out as it doesn’t pass the cab sim through.

So you run the six to FOH this way to bypass the preamp, but Still have the cabsim? Does the cabsim apply to aux?

I actually never said I wasn't going to purchase this
If it is no big deal for you, that is great, but head in the sand about technology obsolescence is a personal choice IMHO.:)

I was being somewhat facetious

I think the draw backs of the IR loader being obsolete at some point in the future out way the positives of this as a product.

I don't need this right right now as I have a solution for everything that this provides, but it might just do it better and easier.

I'm going to wait until Nathan drops the Furthermore Sushi Box and compare I the offerings out there before i go for the one box solution. I'm disappointed there are no tubes but we A/B'd if i can't tell the difference then it's purely academic at that point.

No, I definitely want the preamp, too! It passes everything through the way I have it (out of the line out/phones) - preamp, cab sim, SGT circuit, and aux. Using preamp out, I’d only get the preamp and SGT circuit, so I wanted to make sure I got the cab sim, too, routed out to the Khan to FOH. The DI on the SGT passes the preamp, cab sim, and SGT circuit, but rather than sourcing an XLR to ¼” cable to go from the SGT to the Khan, I just ran it out of the line out/phones jack so it’s 1/4” to 1/4”. I don’t care about the aux getting passed through though, just a result of using the line out/phones Jack to feed the signal I end up using for FOH.
