Ampeg SGT-DI

Took the SGT-DI to the studio for the 1st time last night. It did not disappoint. We were recording a R&B style tune and was looking for an overdriven B15 tone and the SGT-DI delivered. Just enough that you could play clean w/ a light touch but it really blossomed w/ digging in. Never heard this from any previous pedals and it's what I've been looking for.

I found the same thing...what were your settings as I can't make them out from your pic?

Grit level was set at 1:00.

Anyone been successful in adding IR's? Care to share your procedure?

I tried to follow the manual but couldn't find any marked with a "diamond" on the Line 6/Helix site. Even the Ampeg Tech Support couldn't help!

It's super easy. There was some chatter a few pages back, it seems like most people that have checked out the cab sim models the SGT comes with aren't so jazzed with the factory IRs and the stock User IRs are more popular, but several of us loaded our own IRs.

From the way the manual reads, it sounds like the diamond you're looking for isn't on the Line 6 site, it's in the IR Loader to indicate that you've loaded/licensed an IR from the Line 6 site.

An important note is that you can only load IRs to the User IR tab, but loading proper IRs is super drag and drop simple... you should just be able to simply drag an IR from a folder window to slot A/B/C in the app. Alternatively, you can click the import button in the slot you want to load an IR to, and then navigate to the folder where your IR is.

5sg.

Received my DSM Humboldt Simplifier Bass Station. In all honesty it is the winner over the Ampeg for me. The two are level pegging in terms of tone quality, maybe the Ampeg edges slightly ahead if I consider the great depth of Ampeg tone on hand. That’s also a slight negative since the DSM is more transparent, which I favour. The lack of FX loop on the Ampeg, issues with other FX pushing into it, they don’t quite sound like I prefer, especially with the SGT grit turned on. The cab sim overloading is an issue, too much messing around with other FX levels.

Close but no cigar. As I said previously, the Ampeg is great, but it seems that is only really true if it is your only outboard unit.

The Shift-line IR's have really opened my ears with the SGT box. In particular I like their take on the Heritage B15 and Sunn 200s.
I have one of these boxes on the way. I'm excited to try it out. I'm a huge Ampeg fanboi. I will say for folks who haven't liked the tone, different IR's can make a significant difference. It is such a matter of personal preference as to what a good IR is. But in other things that have used IR's (like, currently an HX Stomp that I'm using), I have far preferred the Shift Line IR's (or others) to any stock IR's that have come with it/them. In particular the Ampeg SVT 8x10 (#12 for clean tones, #7 for dirty, for those familiar with the Shift Line sims). I'm sure once I have a chance to try the SGT-DI, I will far prefer the Shift Line IR's to the stock ones.

If you're on the fence about the tone, try some other IR's. It can make a world of difference.

Thought it might be helpful to post some examples of how the SGT-DI sounds in a live mix. I don't have any recordings from recent shows yet, but I do have one from Easter service at church.

If you're only interested in the music, after the first song, the music picks back up at about 57:23. I'm off screen to the left of the drummer because showing the bass player is forbidden!

Using a Lakland 55-02 with relatively new DR Nickel Lo-Riders, onboard pre is flat with a slight boost at 900hz. Both Preamp and the SGT circuit are on here. EQ has a slight boost across the board at about the 1'oclock position. Mid freq set at 1khz. Ultra Lo and Ultra High off. Comp is off (I use a darkglass hyper lumnial). Grit is about 9'oclock. Volume for Preamp and SGT circuit are at unity. Using the Preamp out on the back panel and going straight into the board and our massive PA (so no cab sim is being used here).

Still working on getting some recordings from my regular gigs.

Sounds fantastic! Tight and fat. Love the worship team as well. "I Thank God" is one of my new favorite jams.

I thought I was done with pedals but I just got one. This thing is huge.

It has a compressor in it. I missed that part. :hyper:

I put it in front of an Ampeg PF-50T with a Mesa SW210.

There’s the sound(s). Mind. Blown.

I am with you on this but, my setup is an SGT in front of an Ampeg PF-20T into the effects return of a Fender Rumble 100 Combo. Running a tube amp into 100 watts through a 12" driver is incredible ;)!

I am a happy owner of a tech 21 vt bass v2 (i use b15 emulated sound) and I saw the video where ampeg sgt is compared with a miked b15 and it seems 99,999% accurate.
I searched for a comparison ampeg sgt vs vt bass but apparently no one did yet.
Do you think the b15 emulation of ampeg sgt is much better of vt bass or pretty close?

Yes. But I am very biased. I owned a VT bass in the past and to me it only gets into the ballpark of the ampeg tone. The SGT is great. It can be a little dark sounding but I feel like that is common in most of these devices.

Some of the cabsim ms are very dark. Have you tested same settings without the cabsim? In theory you can find an IR that is voiced more the way you like it and load that on if the cabsims are the culprit.

Has anyone here had an opportunity use the compressor feature? How does it compare to the better comp boxes from Origins, MXR, etc?
Again, don't have mine yet, but I can't imagine a one-knob compressor will be all that great compared to a dedicated compression stomp box. I intend to think of it more as an end-stage limiter. I'll still run my actual compressor(s) up front before it.
