Ampeg SGT-DI

Again, don't have mine yet, but I can't imagine a one-knob compressor will be all that great compared to a dedicated compression stomp box. I intend to think of it more as an end-stage limiter. I'll still run my actual compressor(s) up front before it.

the compressor isn’t my favorite. However, when I run a compressor ahead of the SGT, it kills some of the dynamic response of the grit circuit, which I think is the best part of the SGT. So I end up using the on board compressor as a limiter to prevent the cabsim from clipping.

There is a fine line between Love and Hate for the compressor.
If you find that fine line ,Its Love.. If you over or undershoot, Its Hate.
Agreed. The on board compressor is very sensitive. If you are patient and move the knob minute amounts you can find a good spot and it sounds and behaves well.
Then when you switch basses you have to dial it in again.

it’s not a big problem but it’s nothing to get excited about either.

This is true. Good point. Running a compressor before dirt makes the dirt less touch-sensitive and can kill its creamy goodness. Sometimes I like it that way, though, and I usually run dirt after compressors, but sometimes not. From what I've read, most folks prefer to run compression after touch-responsive dirt pedals. And the same may very well be true of the SGT. Mine is arriving earlier than planned tomorrow, so I'm looking forward to testing that theory.

Here ya go...the minimalistic...

Although not shown, the Power Transformer Line Out on the 20T goes into the Effects Return on the Rumble 100. The grey cable is optional and going to my DI/DAW for recording.

In this setup, your gain and volume is controlled by the 20T. Start off with it low ;).

The pedal board has a tuner/looper, HPF and SGT-DI.

I have OD and Compressor pedals if necessary.

This thing sounds really, really good. I have literally only had about three minutes to play with it through some headphones thus far before having to move on to other things, but it sounds fantastic. Heavy, punchy, tight, warm, are all in there depending on how you dial it in and the IR you use.

So far I am not a fan of the compressor. It is either nothing or really poppy. I may just need more time to dial it in. The controls seem way more interactive than I expected them to be. Either way, I have excellent external compressors I plan to use. The SGT circuit sounds pretty good as well, provided you are using a good IR with it. At least through headphones. Through an amp, without an IR, it may also be perfectly serviceable

I am looking forward to comparing it to my Stomp soon. Clearly it is not an apples to apples comparison. More like apples to Volkswagens. But I am curious how the Ampeg sims in the Stomp compare to the SGT. The SGT has everything I tend to look for in an ampeg sim, and that is just after barely having time to turn the thing on.

I’ll throw it out there, but the ir loader has adjustable HPF and LPF I think if you wanted to simplify more!

Long time, no post, but thanks to this thread, I picked one of these up recently, and wow, am I impressed with it running through my PF-20T into a 1X15 Ampeg PF cab. I decided to take a chance with it and add a NightOwl Industries Edison preamp right in front of it (always on), and the tone is even better, super touch responsive and round. Easily the most satisfying tone that I have ever had.

Got to play with mine a bit more today undisturbed. I will reiterate what I said earlier . . . It sounds really, really good. Here are some thoughts, in no particular order:

1) The preamp sounds killer. The controls truly are interactive and responsive. In that respect, it is not a "set it and forget it." You can't switch between something like an SVT tone and a B15 tone on the fly in the middle of a gig. At least for me. The two tones require very different eq and SGT settings. But once set, sound fantastic. I can get both a phenomenal SVT and B15 tone out of it easy peasy. But can't easily peasily switch between the two. Meh. It is what it is. That's what the HX Stomp is for.

2) The IR's: I love . . . LOVE . . . the factory B15 IR. It sounds so good. So much better than any B15 IR I had on hand. It has that midrangey bark, but still has a lot of depth to the low end, which makes it very usable for me. I'm not a fan of the other two factory IR's. The 4x10 and 8x10. Both of the Shift Line 8x10 IR's sound far better, IMHO. But to each their own.

3) SGT is life. No matter what tone you're after, even if you don't want any drive, engage the SGT with the gain around 9-10:00 and volume to taste. Makes a huge difference in the tone and makes it sound far more life-like and amp-like. And you can run something like the B15 cab sim with the SVT SGT engaged, and it is straight up delicious. Or get a more traditional sounding B15 with the B15 SGT engaged. So good. I don't like how it sounds with the gain cranked. Nothing more than 12:00 on my worst day. More like 10:00. So juicy.

4) I'm still not a fan of the compressor. I know the yellow light kicks in to indicate you've crossed the compressor's threshold, depending on how you set it. But for me, it feels like it's doing nothing for a really long time across the dial, and then once the yellow light kicks on, it's too "poppy." Maybe others would like it, or maybe it would be good for slappers and poppers, of which I am neither. My external compressor pedals will do the job just swimmingly.

All in all, it's not going to replace my Stomp. Nor was it meant to. But for those times where space in the gig bag is limited and I just want to show up someplace and whip this puppy out and sound like I'm playing through a phat Ampeg stack or B15, this thing will do the trick in spades. As a standalone headphone practice unit (for which this is overkill, admittedly), it will more than suffice.

Agreed

Similar setup here. SGT-DI + Edison =
