Ampeg SGT-DI

High pitched hum issue. Just got a lightly used one (looks new to me) in the mail this week. I'm using the Ampeg power supply and the unit is dead quiet, but if I add 1 or 2 effects to the power supply chain, I get this faint annoying high pitched hum. Anyone experience this?

Nope, not for me. You can see my recording setup on post #767 and it's dead quiet.

I hade the same whiny noise with a One Spot daisy chain connected to the SGT-DI with a Polytune and a Hyper Luminal. Switching to the Ampeg power supply eliminated the whine. Two AC leads to the pedal board is a PITA... but no unwanted noise from anything now.

I'm wondering if a proper power supply block would do the trick?

Haven’t been able to find a comparison, but for anyone that has both the SGT and the Ampeg Suite, if you had to pick just one, which way would you go and why? I’ really want the SVT sound for practice and home recording, and the suite is currently on sale…
I just got the SGT-Di and while I like it I will continue to use the Ampeg Suite. The Ampeg 4 Pro on the Rocky setting is sooooo good for the music that I am playing and the amount of flexibility you have with the suite just beats the SGT in my opinion.

Here here. I enjoy the Suite very much and even though I own an SGT, I like the options the program offers. The 4Pro is my fave of the three because I can get a nice clean tone to begin with and then shape it however I want to. Definitely worth the $.

I just received mine today and I’ve been putting it through the paces. It’s a great preamp. It has a great take on the Ampeg tone.

Initially, I had a little trouble fiddling with the different gain stages between the cab sim and input, but once I got that figured out, it’s been very straightforward.

I love the B15 cab sim!

Would anyone recommend this? I was planning to get the Rocket bass combo amp but also thinking of going ampless if I get this preamp. And then there's also the new venture series which uses the same preamp as this but the cabinet might be too expensive for my budget.

So, Ampeg owners of talk bass, should I get this preamp or just the combo amp? My use for it is that I'll be playing/recording from home (so I use plugins by default, this would be fun to use alongside it) while also taking it out when I'm in the studio/going ampless on stage, but I also kinda want a real amp to feel the air pushing and using it as a monitor. The combo that I'll be getting is either the 150 or 210 ver.

So any suggestions? For the record, I've never gone ampless before

Either the 1x15 of 2x10 combo will be plenty for playing at home. I send the SGT-DI thru the effects loop of the combo amp for consistency between the DI and the combo. You can mic the combo if need as well. That gives you plenty of options for recording: SGT-DI, combo DI, mic on cab (if needed).

For the record, my SGT goes to the effects loop on my PF-500 amp. It sounds great!

Well I decided that even though the SgT DI sounds great with some bases, others slam
The front end too hard and there is no way to taper without changing the sound since there’s no pad, a compressor changes the sound and turning down the SGT to the point where it is off defeats the purpose.

I’ll have to revert to something else.

my hot basses (all passive) all work fine direct into an amp, so maybe if the SGT had more headroom on input?

So mine arrived today after trying one in store through a rumble combo and hating it. After reading this thread I thought it made sense to at least try it at home...

Awesome bit of kit with a fantastic clean sound both with and without the cab sims. I feel like I want to use the cab sims as they're there though, but they destroy my c4 synth patches ... any pointers??

Also, I could either be making a fool of myself, or be providing a public service here... but don't get the SGT volume and grit knobs confused! Might seem obvious to most, but they're orientation is OPPOSITE to the preamp volume I.e. preamp volume is top knob, sgt volume is bottom knob! Once I realised this, it became a whole different pedal for me!

The cabsim may be “destroying” your synth patches because cab emulation attenuates higher (and some lower) frequencies according to the cab response.

you can and should explore loading other cabs IRs that have a more open sound like cab models that are open back, have tweeters etc. Also you can tweak the high and low pass in the app so maybe get some frequency relief there as well. I found the 8x10 to be way too dark sounding, even though it might be authentic.

Thanks, klattman! It seems to be something that it's doing in the mids too! Ive tried a load of IRs from celestion, shiftline, dr bonkers, redwirez etc and I think I'm just not a speaker sim kinda guy... tried turning the cab sim off and the SGT circuit has a negative impact on effects being fed in, too .

It's a shame as the clean tone with no cab and sgt engaged is unbelievable (although also suffering a touch of hiss as others have mentioned!)

Took a punt on a Laney Digbeth pre today, and while it's not in the same league as the Ampeg, it also doesn't sound £220 cheaper, and it actually makes my synth stuff sound BETTER! The Laney could be a keeper instead...
