Ampeg SGT-DI

Mine appears to be defective...

when i step on the SGT button the volume drops considerably and the grit and level don't seem to do anything at all (in fact when it's all they way up there is no sound at all) the SVT/B-15 switch seem also to do nothing as well with the cab sim switch (flipping it does not change the sound at all...)

Bummer...

I thought I was done with pedals till I got one. To have two classic Ampeg tones out of the box is remarkable. To tweak them endlessly only adds to the appeal. The video above is very helpful. It’s use as a DI seals the deal. It replaces three other pedals I have for B-15, overdrive and compressor. Right now I’m running it through a Mesa D-350. And it just fits in a gig bag.

Haven’t been able to find a comparison, but for anyone that has both the SGT and the Ampeg Suite, if you had to pick just one, which way would you go and why? I really want the SVT sound for practice and home recording, and the suite is currently on sale…

I've been meaning to do a review on this preamp pedal for a month now but summer laziness got a hold of me. That is until I saw this question posted. Besides the SGT, I also own the SVT Suite, B15N and SVT-VR Classic by Brainworx, besides plugins of Softube's Eden WT800, and Brainworx's GK 800RB and Fender Bassman called BassDude. So yeah, I am familiar with plugins vs. pedals.

To answer your question, and sorry if I'm late here and you've already made a decision if I was gonna make a purchase it would definitely depend on my uses for any of these products. If I'm a DIY recording enthusiast who is unlikely to play out, I'd go for the plugins and hold off buying the SGT. The Suite gives you everything the pedal does and more. It's pretty intuitive and makes a huge difference in comparison to my original recorded track. It alone may be all you need, again if you're only recording. the Brainworxs plugins are also very good, especially the B15N which was mentioned.

The reason I bought the SGT was to capture separate B15 and SVT tones that not only could be used to record but more importantly, used to gig with. Otherwise, the SGT is redundant and I'd be better off using the $400 on something else. The pedal, both preamp and SGT circuit, are very good though, and worth having available if you plan on playing out and want either of those tones. The preamp is the default Ampeg Classic pre, but a notch up from the SCR-DI, which I previously owned, due to the sweepable midrange control. Then add the SGT, which I also enjoy using on my Rocket Bass 112 combo, and you have a powerful tool on the floor alongside your other pedals. the Ultra Lo and Hi are probably more to one's tastes but provide nice tonal options just the same.

Moving to the cabinet options, I myself found the six IRs to be functional, especially the SVT 810 and 212 cabs, but the others are fun to mess with. The B15's cab is decent but sometimes sounds muddy to me. I like the numerous cab options on the Brainworx B15N better and think they tend to sound better. That said, I do like having the cab sims available on the SGT as yet another of its plentiful options.

So right now, how do I feel about the SGT? It's a definite step up from the SCR-DI, but if you have your live rig covered with all you need and are looking more into amps for recording, I'd vote for the SVT Suite. If you typically use a power amp live and separate preamps and are looking to snag some Ampeg vibe, this pedal couldn't be a better choice. It'll give you most of what you need, yeah, I'm not crazy one way or another about the compressor, for not only live gigging but also when it's time to record a track or two.

gruidl, feel free to ask any questions you may have if you're still on the fence about buying the SGT. Finally, this has been a really interesting thread with great points made by numerous contributors. Nice job, all!

This is awesome, thank you! I did wind up pulling the trigger on the Brainworx SVT plug-in that was on sale, but haven’t used it yet. I’ll be using this for recording, as I’ve got a few other pre options, and sometimes have an SVT supplied as backline. Still want to try the SGT if I can find one here in town!

Good for you, congrats! Again, I’m sorry I was so late in replying; I hoped I could help ya make sense out of everything.

That plugin will serve you well. If you dig the B15 tone, pick up their version of that when it’s on sale too.

The SGT is still worth the audition. Just today I swapped out the three Ampeg user cabs and installed three of the Shift Line cabs which will give the SGT more variety.

Lastly, the SVT Suite is a great app and worth the money if you’re a diehard Ampeg fan. Let your SVT plugin give you a taste of things to come if you become interested.

Again, thanks for the reply and enjoy! :hyper:

Ordered...this seems to be everything I wanted the SCR-DI to be! I had actually moved away from my pedalboard using the Ampeg sims in the HX Stomp to a rack mount Ampeg SVP-CL preamp, but I may go back to the pedal board after this arrives. This through the Khan DI will be quite the nice pedalboard rig!
I still am kicking myself for selling my SVP-CL and SVP-1600...

Hi to all. I have achieved a very nice overdriven sound with the Brainworx SVT classic plugin and with the Brainworx SVT trial I downloaded.

Does the SGT channel sound better than any of these plugins? Can I drive harder the input of the pedal to achieve more Overdrive?

I am thinking of buying the pedal for home practice or recordings in other places than my house.
Thank you

After having the SGT-DI for 3 months, I think that the SGT-DI is a "must-have". I cannot vouch for authenticity of the SVT and B15 tones but the pedal delivers bass wonderfulness. It has some great cabs to boot. Though I much prefer the replaceable cab sims over the hard-wired ones.Headphone out for silent jams. Aux in. Oh, yeah! I also have the SVT suite. There is some overlap between the two but they are different genus.

I have the Brainworx B15N. I find the software buggy. It crashes Logic Pro and Ableton quite often. The Brainworx plugin is more flexible, to some degree, over the SGT-DI. The SGT-DI is sooo easy to dial in the tone I want with the B15 setting.

Nathan showing what the SGT-DI can do:

I just need Fender or maybe Origin Effects to make a Bassman pedal with not just the amp sim but "all the fixins'. I asked Fender about it and they said they would look into it.
