Ampeg stack just for looks?

I'd like to point out for reference that the "Ampeg stack" being referred to here seems to be the SVT + 810E "refrigerator". There are other Ampeg stacks (personally I go 2x15), so I don't want JimmyM berating youse guys for being vague. 
last i saw, ampeg also makes plenty of small gear if that's your thing.
anyway, i'm glad that someone brought this stupid-ass thread from the dead. how dare any of you presume to tell anyone else what they need. i happen to love the sound i get out of my big ampeg stuff, and i bring it for ME, not YOU. frankly, i couldn't give a rat's ass what anyone else thinks of it. if that's a problem for you, then i suggest you don't show up to my gigs.

We here on Talkbass are very familiar with the brands (Berg, etc) but outside of here - not so much and, quite frankly, the paying public couldn't care less about WHAT we play as long as it sounds good. As in all things, that's the bottom line....

I can't say I've tried a bunch of stuff but I've tried three different cabs and three different heads and in each case I've come back to the SVT/810. It just sounds best in the mix.
Well, at least it seems that Ampeg has managed to stay relevant 3 years after the thread started....
Anyway, I don't care what my rig looks like. I like the way big tube heads sound through big cabs regardless of volume. And yes, the cab is miked. The cab is part of the sound too....

same here. i hate di's. well ok, i don't hate them, but i don't like them nearly as much as a mic.

I do admit when ampeg cabs stack up it look pretty good, but to me other brand stack up look good too. i.e 2x 4x10 markbass stack up, ashdown look decent too ......
I only use ampeg svt cabs because they are damn cheap second hand and it produce decent enough tone to gig etc .... but they weight tons .....

honestly? Most people have no idea about what a bass guitar even is. Ihave dated girls that didn't know the difference until they cam to see me play (after we were dating). Much less do they care about amps. DO you think anyone can tell which amp is plugged into who? Most music fans probably think it is the PA back there.
As far as bass players buying it for the looks, Ampegs are not the prettiest of amps. Neither are they the most looks challenged (I think Peavey and Markbass are fighting over that prize!).
If anything I know a lot fo bassists that buy rigs based not so muchon looks, but on status. How much it cost. Mesa surely had this cachet for a while. I recall Hartke being the status brand for a minute, back when their 4x10 cabs were a lot and they didnt make heads. SWR had a period of being the "it brand" as well. I surely could think of 3 or 4 other brands that get bought for looks before ampeg. Aguilar and their various chocolate monster/green thunder etc cabs come to mind. Then there is Orange/Matamp!

i certainly didn't buy any of my ampeg stuff for looks. but i do consider them the prettiest amps on the market, and i certainly don't mind how great they look. but i really want a heritage b-15, and if i can ever swing it, it will be more based on looks than anything else since i already have a b-15 
99.9% of the audience members have no idea what amp you are using. Or care for that matter. Play what you like and what sounds good to you and your music. Talk shop with the other gearheads from the other bands and listen. You may learn something. If someone is busting your chops for how you look... Well, hopefully you should know what to think of that!

Seems to me that there are plenty of great looking rigs out there other than Ampeg but I have been GASsing for an Ampeg setup ever since I played through one for the first time a few months ago. Even our tone deaf drummer thought it sounded great.
