Ampeg SVT 7 Pro arriving tomorrow !!!!

anyone else have any opinions on this head? contimplating selling my GK700rbII and getting one of these guys. How's the compression on the head? I'm using a EBS compressor right now, is the compressor good enough for me to ditch the EBS if I get the head?

I'm on the fence with the compressor; you should try it yourself and see what you think. Single knob, variable ratio to 10:1, all other parameters fixed. I don't normally use a compressor for fingerstyle, but this is handy for a little slap. Still diggin' the amp, for sure.

Although the SVT-7 is my backup amp, took it to a gig last night to try it out, using a 4 ohm Accugroove cab. Had repeated shutdowns in the second set, the sound would just stop, then come back on, although no lights/ led's on. Had master volume at about 3/4, pre-volume midway, compression minimal. This is unacceptable, will need to look into options. In the 3rd set, raised the compression to midway to squash more transients, no shutdowns. However, I should be able to run at 3/4 volume with no compression, I believe. Will give Ampeg a call tomorrow. BTW, didn't have the Bass eq cranked on the head or the basses, normally run flat on the basses and a bit of boost on the amp.

That model does have a non-defeatable limiter, in addition to the compressor. It sounds like you were running up against the limiter.

Tom.

+1 to Tom's comment.

Also, remember, the absolute level of the volume control does not indicate the power output of the amp. With a hot input signal and aggressive technique, you could have easily been running that amp into the red (i.e., beyond full rated power) with those gain and master settings.

That being said, an amp with the published specs of that one should be able to blow the speakers out of any cab without breaking a sweat.

Was using a Stingray Classic, which is NOT a hot bass, playing fingerstyle. I have passive basses with more output. I had the opportunity to set the rig up in the living room today and play loud. The situation is 1oo% repeatable; I wouldn't call a circuit that cuts off power with a loud pop a limiter!! It does reset quickly, but doesn't seem like a good situation to repeat regularly. I think the power rating is questionable; its listed at 5%THD in 4 ohms, no indication of bandwith or any other parameters.

I was able to reduce the master, and increase the pre-Gain and compression to get a bit more volume. Ultimately, this is not really a loud amp, would call it moderate. BTW, no Marshall stacks here; both guitar players using 1-12's at medium volume.

That's pretty odd man. I run this through a 800 Watt GK neo 4x10. It's loud, and has never run into the limiter.

I run zero compression, gain at 3/4 with master around 5-7 depending on how hard the drummer I am playing with hits.

This amp easily puts my MM squarely in the mix. I only wish I had a 15 to run in parallel with the 4x10 for more thump.

My only beef with it is the lack of a pre-amp in jack on the back panel. I would much rather run my chain through the back panel instead of the front jack. Other than that this amp rocks.

BTW, one thing lost in the conversation here, it does sound good, that is not in question.
Honestly, once I quit seeing what this thing can do, it will be a backup, or for low volume when I don't want to haul the SVT-CL. There is no comparison in volume, an alleged 1000W switching power vs. 300 tube watts. I've never used the SVT master volume beyond about 50 % ( of course, there's no telling what the power output is, as pointed out ).

Def not good, might be the voice coils slamming the magnet at the same time as the amp limiting out. What I find really lacking here is any kind of indicator on the amp letting you know that you're in a territory where it's going to suddenly become non-compliant. I only had my 7 Pro pause on me once, when I was giving it a workout. It was loud, repetitive thumb whacking on the E string and loud G string popping that got it to quit. But it was really loud. Louder than I would want to push my gear regardless of ratings on a regular basis. Louder than my guitard had ever heard any bass in his house. I now play just under that level, which still gives chest punching volume through an 810E or 410. Have to gauge it totally by ear and feel though; the amp won't give you any warning.

It is possible that this specific amp limits early, may be some variance in the power detection circuitry. Also, "loud' is relative.

What's that, you say??? Can't hear you!!

Two guitards, each with Mesa Triple Rec half stacks. Mic'd kick and everything else bleeds through full PA at rehearsals. Visitors ask for earplugs. We had to upgrade the breakers in order to practice. I've got 4600 watts at my disposal, though I'm a little light on drivers (12x10). So the little 7 Pro doesn't have to work too hard in its life with me. It will do fine on its own, however. We're all grown men. I guess we just have a lot of angst.

Ampeg confirmed that the amp does intentionally shut down in protection mode, that in itself is not a defect. Beyond that, they didn't seem to think it was likely that this unit was different than any other. No mention of any engineering mods related to the shutdown circuitry.
I did try a couple of different preamp tubes, per their suggestion, no change. So, potential buyers need to understand this, and determine if the volume and headroom are adequate.
