Ampeg SVT 7 Pro arriving tomorrow !!!!

I wanted to try one of these out today so I went to the closest GC and they had one but there was some pimple faced kids just wanking away on a guitar through a tube amp and playing at a ridiculous volume. I just left. Then later I was out with the family and there was a GC nearby so I stopped in to see if they had one. Of course, it didn't work. Every time I connected it to a cab it would turn off. I tried different cords/cables and still wouldn't work. I would really like to hear one of these. I'll stop by the first GC again when school is in session and hopefully it'll be quieter.

I went last Saturday to my closest GC (1hour) to try one. I was actually very impressed with the amp's volume, features and tone.

But I decided to go with the Pro 4 instead. All the reviews I read said it was like a Pro 4 with a class D power section. But I found it to be more of a cross between a Pro 4 and a Pro 4. It seemed to get more of a Pro 2 "grind" way quicker than a Pro 4. I was in the market for clean headroom so the Pro 4 us more for me.

But that's good news for Pro 2 fans or those who want Ampeg grind with 1000 watts of power pushing it. Anybody looking for that won't be disappointed. I recommend it highly.

Yeah, lights came on, take off the mute switch and it shut down. So I turned it off changed cables and tried again and again. No luck. I didn't check voltage switch but next time I will. I'd really like to hear this amp. I have an SVT-II (non-pro) to compare it to.

Grindy, grindy, grindy that's why I like it :D. It has (to me) a GK400RBish grind coupled with a classic Ampeg tone.

Tried one out at GC a couple weeks ago. Pretty solid piece - similar to svt3, br2e I have used before. Knobs were all sturdy, etc. Weighs about 15 lbs - I do like the smaller class-d amps - I don't think this one will fit in a gear bag. I would still probably rack it in a case. Still lighter, but, another piece of equipment to load.

Did take maybe 3 seconds or so to fire up. Did not notice any loud fan, but I was in a guitar store. I thought the tone was pretty much ampeg. I actually thought it stayed fairly clean, but I did not drive it as loud as I would have liked. This also stopped me from seeing any limiter cutout.

I think for me, it is priced low enough, and if i wait for a MF 15% sale (like we just had), I would be willing to pick one up and compare to some of the heads I have. I have 30 days then to really test it out, see if the limiter issue happens, and return it or keep it. If I can get a decent ampeg sound and close to that kind of power for under $700, I think it is worth having one.

I haven't had any limiter issues with mine. Great tone, very portable, simple controls. It's everything I like about a head. It does have a delay in startup which is annoying, but not really that bad. Unfortunately I have to let mine go, but it has nothing to do with performance issues. For the price point I don't think there is anything else that has the ampeg sound. IMHO of course.

Anybody find a laptop bag that is big enough and deep enough for the SVT-7?

And, can someone suggest why there are large rubber feet on the rear panel, since standing it up on those feet prevents speaker cables from being connected ...

Well, the SVT-7 Pro arrived today. Got home after work, cooked dinner for the kids, read them stories and put them to bed, and settled down with a bass and the amp for some bonding. Plugged the SVT-7 in, hit the power switch, there was a loud pop and smoke began to pour our of the unit.

Not an ideal start. And yes, I ensured that the voltage selector was in the right position before I switched it on.

Anyone else have one blow up spectacularly like this upon first start up?

The dealer is putting this right for me, a replacement is arriving by courier today. The first one that blew up was totally sealed and unopened since it left the factory, so I was the first person to throw the power switch.

The store took my replacement out of the box yesterday and ran it for a few hours, so hopefully the smokin' start I had with the first SVT-7 will just be something I can put down to experience.

BC of the handles on the front. If it's not racked then they do a good job of protecting the switches and knobs. I had an SVT3 with no feet and it was really annoying.

Bummer to hear about the fry up!
