Hello bass addicts,

Got my pro7 last week, still tweeking the knobs, but gettin there...
I use a self built preamp with 2 12ax7 in through the fxloop at about 12 to colour the lows a bit warmer
I do play a vintage oldie , a customized kramer which is rather trebly, not easy to create a warm but crunchy low anyway

Anyone got any experience with other 12ax7 in the pro7 ?

Still im sure ill be needing a number, cause the 7 is a keeper: great soundrange nd lots of power !

If you're using a pre in the loop, wouldn't you be defeating the 7 Pro's preamp? Or do you have it plugged into both the return and send as opposed to just the return?

If this is sarcasm or an attempt to be witty, it's pretty much impossible to tell at this point, so I'll bite.

That switch is an input pad/attenuator that reduces the strength of the input signal by roughly 15 decibels (dB). It's commonly used to prevent signal clipping from basses with hot onboard preamps.

The dB acronym has nothing to do with Dolby Labs or any of their old "noise reduction" technologies. It is a measure of relative signal level.

I brought the MIA P Deluxe 5'er last night to practice last night. I forgot how much I dislike Fender basses. However, This bass brought out so much in my 7Pro. I hit that low D and killed it. It shook that bottom end like its life depended on it. OMG. Really. It just killed. I put the mid-switch on 2, boosted the mid knob to about 2 o'clock and bam. There it was. In all its glory. Ampeg just sang. Clean Clear boomy bassy.. How many other words can I use to describe it. Voiced like I would expect it to sound. A little tweak of my mids and highs on my bass to eliminate some of the crispy high end and kapow!! I will be changing the stock 12AX7 for a Ecc83s and that should do it.

I rolled a number of tubes through.
As with many 1 tube pre-amp / integrated MI amps, the difference is not that great.
I ended up using my normal favorite which is a Telefunken although Amperex longs plate and Mullards also sounded nice.
The stock tube is no slouch and has higher output than the above mentioned tubes.

I don't think I could tell the difference in any sort of double blind test although it is noticeable with quick switch outs by comparison.

Hey Troph, thanks for your explanation. I didn't know that, which is why I asked if I was incorrect. Still sounds about the same to me. Nonetheless, yeah, I was saying to make sure that was not activated because it really impedes on the tone... In a way similar to what the cat was talking about.

Gnome, I am glad it opened up for you. The thing sounds real nice when you get it right!! Awesome sauce.

+1 on some amps being very sensitive to tube changes; I felt that way about the Mesa Walkabout and some old stereo gear (primarily Dynaco which came with a rebranded Tele). The stock tube is a JJ.

Yes, the Ecc83s is exactly the same footprint as the 12AX7, but the European designation. However, IMHO, I prefer the Ecc over the 12. Just sounded better to me. The differences are subtle, but just like every tube. They all are different. Plates, and blah blah blah. All give slight differences in sound. Most not even noticeable.
