Ampeg SVT 7 Pro Club

I finally got to run my 7Pro with the band last night. It has a very dark sound to it. Used my trusty Modulus Genesis V. Clean clear upper end, but very dark and merky bottom side. Got to mess with it more to try to clean up that bottom end. No definition and the mid scoop 5 position switch did not impress me at all. The amp did take on some serious volume though. However, I think my cabinets had a lot to do with it as well. I only dug out my 1212 and was running at 8Ohms. As the practice went on, the sound changed on me. It got darker as the amp ran. Don't know if that is usual, but something I am not used to. Makes me wonder if it is always like that and if so, I don't think I can keep it. My sound has to be there from moment 1. We have played where we got off the road, unloaded directly onto stage and played. So if it takes a while for the amp to warm up, I am not diggin that at all. I will know more Friday at our next practice.
Used the bass boost both in and out. Did not change the clarity of the bottom end. Huge bottom end either way. I am actually wanting to figure out how to get the sound from the song "Never Been any reason" by Head East, but I don't think I can reproduce that without a Classic and a P-bass, which I accept and am ok with. So, Clean, Clear and articulate is the sound I am going for.
I have no problem getting clean tone and big volume from the SVT7 with passive J's or P's or my Warwick Thumb. I'm wondering if it was a loud rehearsal ?? I've had the tone / volume going murky before on various amps and it's been suggested that it's hearing fatigue. Our drummer gets stupidly louder as the gig progresses.

I've played a couple of gigs with mine now. It seems to me that it's lacking in power and not "responsive"...dont know how else to put it. It seems that some notes just don't come thru as they should and others too loud. I've tried using the built in compressor and even a pedal...tried different settings with/without each. I don't think its a technique problem, never had it before and have been playing for many years. Didn't have it with my last amp, a Peavey Tour 450, and I'm using the same bass. The PV seemed to have more power too and it's only 450w...maybe I got a dud?
I can't speak on some notes not being as loud as others because that has never happened with my 7Pro but as far as volume and power are concerned, I can say with conviction that the 7Pro should be tearing off peoples faces before it's cranked all the way.
One thing to consider is the gain structure, it's very different, at least IME, than other amps I've played. Before you completely dismiss the 7Pro, experiment with the gain structure and seen if that doesn't help with the volume/power issues because honestly, I can't see how volume/power could be a problem.
Just out of curiosity, what kind of cab are you using?
Im using an 810 classic cab, and have it plugged into the correct input of the cab...so thats 4ohms and the amp should be putting out full power. I have experimented with the gain...I play the bass and turn up the gain till the light blinks, then back it off a bit, try giving it a little more... I'm using a Fender American Deluxe Jazz do setups myself so I know the pups height is good...don't seem to be getting any real volume till I get the volume knob up to about the 2 o'clock mark. Even then it isn't any louder than the PV Tour 450 at about the same position...dunno? I was hoping someone may have had an issue like this before and could tell me what they did. I'm thinking I should send it back for a new one while I still can
Oh, I have cranked the gain up past that. I have a gig this Sat. and will try again. But if no improvement I'll be exchanging it at least. Back in the day I had an SVT tube head and 2 810s...that thing kicked some serious a$$...not a stranger to Ampeg...this head isn't close.
Turn the gain up to12:00 and then adjust the volume.

There are tons of threads explaining the use of gain and the "clipping" light with Ampeg amps. Probably at least a dozen comments in this thread alone...
Also the mid selector is not a scoop, it is a mid frequency center. 1-2 for enhanced low mids...3 is 800 hz, methinks, and 4-5 for high mids... Generally is set to 2 or 3. Make sure you don't have the dolby reduction on. Might want to look at the manual. Good luck.
I usually keep the gain around 2 o'clock and I can get the volume up to around 11 o'clock before things start falling off the walls.
I like the gain anywhere between 12 and 3 of the clock. If cutting is a problem, I would boost the mids to about 3, set at 2 or 3 on the selector. To maximize volume, dial the bass back to 12 or so, and keep the high and low boost off. If that don't get loud as all **** there is a problem.
