In most cases it's related to the auxiliary powersupply controller. An IC with an auto restart function goes into thermal clipping, restarts (=makes the amp cut out), goes into thermal clipping, restarts and so on. In my case, the IC released all of its magical blue smoke:

Got it back with a pristine new mainboard:

I haven't had any problem whatsoever since it came back. As a precaution, I have cemented an aluminum heat sink on it, lowering the measured temperature of the IC when in use by 23 degrees Celsius. A heat sink and some thermal cement costs next to nothing. I ordered [Invalid or Expired Link Removed].

I have absolutely no idea. I don't know whether the problem of cutting out is solved when only replacing the controller or whether the entire mainboard needs to be swapped with one of a higher revision level.
If replacing the IC is the fix, it is large enough to replace yourself or have it done by someone with a steady soldering hand in your vicinity. If out of warranty, my first suggestion for a cheap fix would be to place a heat sink on the controller to see whether that is a solution.

I am thinking about taking a look at some 7pros, both used and new. Where does one find the the Rev # listed on the back of the amp. Is there a way to determine the year of manufacture for newer amps?
The revision number is listed on the boards inside the amp. You have to remove the top cover. There is a preamp board and a main power board. The most recent revision for the power board is G.

a Recall would be a good idea... I really want one. But mine has to be as rock solid as my other amps.. And im an Ampeg lover too.....
My Rev C starting cutting out a couple months ago. It's almost 3 years old and had a 2 year GC Pro warranty. Never gigged it hard. mostly used in studio and rehearsals. The response from Ampeg (Loud) after waiting for a reply for 2 weeks was what's your zip code and we can tell you where to take it to get repaired. Just thought because of the history of this amp, basically a lemon, they would offer some type of repair at n/c. Not the case for me. Loved the amp but not going to fork out money on a fix that may or may not work. I will never buy another Ampeg product after learning how they choose to handle a situation like this.
They really really dropped the ball on this one. Like I said , they should do a mass recall. They know they have a defective product. I feel cheated.
The amp sounds good it just has a major design flaw.Where's Jimmy to give us our weekly pep talk on how great this amp is?
I don't want to 'jinx' myself, but I have a previously owned SVT 7 Pro head, which the prior owner said was six months old when I got it, and I've had it for six months now, and, admittedly I don't gig with it every night, and I don't use it for practice or rehearsal every night, I DO use it a fair amount, and I have had zero, zilch, nada, no issues with it at all!
