ampeg svt 7 pro cutting out

During practice last night the ol 7 pro statred cutting out on me for the first time. It got to the point where it was cutting out 5 or 6 times during one song. I may have been running tooo much signal through it. Im assuming the irreversible damage has been done, what to u guys think?

What else is in the signal chain? Eliminate all the variables and play the bass through the amp and cab. What bass btw? Does it have a battery? If so, use a passive bass (and check active's battery) If it continues, make the following substitutions to isolate the issue.

Get rid of effects, pedal tuners etc in signal chain.

Use a different (passive if you can) bass. (Eliminating jack and pickup issues on the bass you were using).
Then swap out instrument cord. (Eliminating crappy cord problem).
Then swap out speaker cable. Ditto.
Swap out and try with another cab. (Eliminating cab jack, wiring and driver problems).

If none of these things indicate your problem is elsewhere, then it's time to find a good amp tech - check the FAQ's for the good amp techs thread at the top of the forum - and get it in for repair.

But, the key to DIAGNOSING signal problems is ISOLATING the suspected problem component. With 2 or more variables you can't be sure, so eliminate all the other variables first. Once the problem component is isolated you can take appropriate corrective action.

Im only using amp and cab to begin with. Im on board with eliminating possible outside issues, It is an active pickup. speakon cable is new. I wiggled all the inputs, and checked the cable for shorts. I did not go as far as trying different cables n bass. Im a straight finger picker, no slaps or pops. The master volume is set at 3/4, gain about 1/4. the signal peak light came on pretty regularly. should have had the 15 pad button engaged. When I say cutting out I mean its losing all power, after 5 seconds it comes back. Im gonna play with it some more tonight, thanks for askin.

I did check the number, and it started with a C. I had heard of issues with the previous versions. Im using the charvel bass with a new battery. Since I took out some bass and engaged the 15 decibal pad, I assume I was pushing the amp too hard. Maybe I should sell it while its not fried and get an svt 3 or svt 4?

If it's acting up it most likely already has a problem and is fried.
Is it new or used? If it's new and less than 5 years old it has a warranty on it. In that case call Ampeg and send it in.
Mine was a revision C00 and after I got it fixed (mine was a bad headphone jack) I sold it because I felt I couldnt trust it.
If it's not under warranty it'll set you back a bit.....

How are you setting the amp up? Setting the tone where you want it and bringing up the gain to where it barely clips (unless you like distortion) and go from there?

Just remember that these new class D amps will not take a 2 ohm load, so you can use either a 4 or an 8 ohm load without problems.

3/4 master is a lot. 1/4 gain is very little. If you are hitting the "clip" light at 1/4 gain you have an very hot bass output. I would suggest using the 15db pad. I would try that, at volume, and see if the problem persists. If you are blasting the pre so much the amp is shutting down to protect itself the amp probably is ok, but it is possible you have damaged it or just exposed an existing problem that needs servicing.

How would I go about finding the age of the amp? I know its a revision c, but thats about it. I would be very interestd in sending it to them for a warranty repair if possible. Like I said, after turning off the bass boost and turning on the 15 decibal pad there were no issues. I figured less gain would be easier on the amp, it still sounds good but not the tone I had before. Wonder if im asking too much out of it. Im running 1 4 10 hlf cab btw.

Bim, that is accurate to what Ampeg posted on Facebook a couple years ago, but Hodgy said a few weeks ago that that number moves with different models. Since the first few digits are the model code and the codes aren't always the same length, it won't always be the 12th digit.

Super common problem.

I've had an svt7pro for roughly 3 years now. On the 5th one provided to me by Loud Tech directly with the exception of the first replacement. All of them were revision C00 with the 'fixed' output section. The output section just eats itself, plain and simple. I've also have horror stories from trying to get the thing fixed through a repair shop. Gist of it was that it took 2+ months and I was required to buy another solution to get me through the gigs at that time. Ended up picking up a Steward power amp and using a presonus tube pre that I had laying around. Fast forward to now and my current svt7pro is again cutting out, and has control panel component issues. Loud Tech will no longer ship me a replacement directly and being fearful of another 2 month repair turn around time I decided to buy a Genz-Benz and and drop that svt7pro off for the last repair it'll ever likely see. I'll be shelving this amp as a backup once it comes back.

If you've got a valid warranty through Loud Tech, just give em a call. Probably the best, no questions asked, warranty service that I've ever experienced. Wish I could say the same for the amp.

Thanks for your input, sorry youve had such a rough time with it. Is that the 5 year warranty other people have spoke of? Im gonna check the age of mine and see if im eligible for that. So the only ampeg solution would to go with a svt 3 or 4 I guess, without getting into huge dollars.
