Ampeg SVT 7 Pro - Cutting out ???

Sorry man, that sucks!

Hopefully you can return it, only hassle free way out. At least it didn't cut out on you during a gig like it did for me. This is why you don't buy ampeg anymore, not with out a 30-day return policy. You just can't trust much of the new stuff. Don't trust the SVT-7s or the PF-500s.

Fanboys will argue otherwise but the facts are they had two terrible lemon rollouts in the last 5 years with the SVT-7 then the PF-500! What other company has that? Burn the community once, shame on you, burn us twice....
First off, the 7 Pro rollout was in 2007, so it's actually 10 years. Second, what company has had two bad rollouts? All major companies have had at least two, some way more. But hey, not telling you what to do. If you wish to move on from Ampeg, vote with your dollars.

I think we are both wrong, wasn't it Winter NAMM 2010 it was anounce? I'll respectfully disagree that there are modern parallels on the same scale even within the last decade.

I get it, JimmyM likes Ampeg and for good reasons. But it is disservice to bass community not to warn buyers of SVT7 Pro and PF-500. And if I ever get over the SVT7 burn I will not buy Ampeg without 30-day return policy.

This conversation does nothing to help @Vyky though. As TB's strongest Ampeg advocate, do you have any advice besides a quick return?

Looks like you might be right. Seems like longer, though. Mi mistako.

Nothing other than return it or call Ampeg.

So guys, I figured out my problem, and amp is perfectly fine, I tested it with bass of my friend, because mine is on service, and he have active Ibanez... I cranked up amp today one more time, and the problem ocured much oftenly. And than ,,hey that bass have battery inside" changed battery, works like charm, I owe apology to ampeg... It was my bad

Glad to hear it was a simple solution!

That is nice, bet that was a relief.

just an FYI on my 7 pro:
my SVT7 pro started acting up again (i.e. cutting in and out), but this time nothing was blowing up/burning parts. it just started cutting in and out, and pretty rapidly.
seeing that they updated the suspected chip from an ICE2A165 to an ICE2A265 (1 amp vs 2 amps) and since i previously installed a socket for it i decided to give that one a shot.
it hasn't cut out yet. i used a laser temp gun and noticed that the new chip was getting very hot (191 degrees F!) but not beyond its rated operational thermal spec of 285 degrees, but just to be sure, i added an aluminum heatsink to it and applied it with 3M thermal tape. now it only gets up to about 132 degrees after an hour of running it and it hasn't cut out since.

You shouldn't have to run it at 4 ohms to stop that from happening. I don't know much about them but I do know that John K's info about using a different ICE chip in newer ones is accurate. I'd get back with Ampeg and tell them what the tech said and mention this newer ICE chip that John K is talking about and ask if yours has it. How long have you had it? Is it still under warranty?

I bought it 2 years ago

it was a display model so it only had 90 days warranty

Well maybe contact this tech again after you find out what ICE chip is in it, and if it's not the new one, maybe ask what he'd charge to replace it. You can buy new main PC boards for the 7 Pro as well, and they attach with a handful of molex plugs and a few screws and they're pretty simple to replace if you keep track of where the plugs go. Would probably be less expensive to have a tech replace the ICE chip, but it's another option. But if you do that, call or email Full Compass first and make sure they have the ICE2A265 chip.

I just picked up a dead SVT-7 PRO with a fried U2 (ICE2A165/265) plus four shorted snubber diodes D3,9,12,13, too. Infineon has obsoleted the part. The current 5th generation of the component has a slightly different pinout, but minor. I'll give this a try when my mouser order arrives ;) Link Removed

Hey everyone,

I recently purchased a new SVT 7 Pro, and I used it at a gig last night, which apart from practising in my bedroom, was the first time I'd pushed it past 9 o'clock on the master volume.

I used it on the weekend at a big gig (about 800 people), and it kept cutting out at random times throughout songs. It was driving me nuts - it was the first time it had really been pushed. I had it going through an Ashdown MAG 410 Deep. The settings from the start of the night, the ones I set when we sound checked, were: Comp - 1 o'clock/ Gain - 1 o'clock/ Bass - 11 o'clock/ Midrange - 1 o'clock w/ selector on 1/ Treble - 1 o'clock/ Master - 2 o'clock. I also had a Tech 21 Paradriver going through the FX loop, with the FX mix set at noon. The Paradriver was being used to provide a bit more grind when it was needed, and didn't boost the volume at all, due to the FX mix settings.

When all the problems began happening, I turned the compressor up and the gain down - as I remembered reading it had something to do with them, but couldn't exactly remember what. The settings at the end of the gig were pretty much the same except the Comp was set to 3 o'clock.

I've asked JimmyM about it through a P.M. and he said that it may have something to do with the protection circuit ?. I just wanted to see if anyone else has had a similar problem.

The bass guitar I was using was an Epiphone Thunderbird IV, w/ both volume knobs set at 10, and the tone at 4.

If anybody else has had this kind of issue with their SVT 7 Pro I would really appreciate some feedback on the situation. The revision number is C00, and I bought it new on Ebay from an authorised Ampeg dealer in the USA and had it shipped here (New Zealand), so I don't think it has its warranty anymore due to international shipping...

Thanks for your time.

Liam
