Ampeg SVT-II appreciation thread

thanks for the info anderbass!!

In the dating section, it is the country code that threw me. They don't have a "Z" listed as an option.

Also, I was doing more research on the nv610 last night and realized that I was looking at a price quote that wasn't in US currency. ~$1000 seems a bit more realistic as compared to other cabs.

Thanks again for the info.

Thanks again, you are quite the wealth of ampeg info. I'll pm Jerrold to see if he can help me figure out the Z country code.

By the way, I'm not going to mod the case, I'm just going to cut some panels so that they'll fit in the front and back. I should be able to cut them to size (prolly with holes in the front one to allow room for the rack ears) and then wrap them in carpet so that they will stay in place with friction only.

Hello I am on the quest for the ultimate SVTII little dirt helper

So far have tried

- SAPBDDI ... no luck / harsh

- modded rat pedal with full bass ... good / great

- ebs valve drive .... good but dont really need the tube OD with an all tube amp, can mush things up

- digitech bad monkey .... good but its lacking some definition and deep bass and high end

tech 21 xxl bass ... good but harsh and missing deep lows

.. anyone else got any recommendations I use either a tbird or a pbass

cheers
J

hey anders bass

the dual inputs worked for a while but when my bass was clean it sounded different to when it was clean going into just the normal input and I thought things were not as they should be .... but maybe I should give it another try since I am now using an epi tbird as my main bass

Thing is I am convinced there is a pedal out there that can do what I need : Light full range dirt, you know just the getting edgey sound of an SVT

my modded rat does full range full on dirt really nicely so the high gain stuff is taken care of but its just the lightly overdriven sound I have no solution for.

I am wondering about the Sans Amp VT Pedal but I think all that speaker simulation is what does not work for me with sans amps running into SVTs. it really changes the sound a great deal.

it could be a really simple pedal, just needs to be true bypass(or as close as possible) and not tax any frequencies

Are U talkin about the NEW Sansamp(tech 21) pedal here? I'm interested to see how IT goes. :bassist:
Yeah I WISH we COULD get the power amp drive that the SVT2 gives, but the "gain/master vol" set up just OD's the Pre amp tubes AFAIK & doesn't sound NEAR what the SVT2 does when CRANKED!! AHHHH thats GLORIOUS :hyper:
Atm I simply use the Behringer BDDI21( sansAmp Bass driver copy) & IT does an EXCELLENT job for the $$$$$( sorry just $$- it's CHEAP) I also use a Russian Big Muff-w/ the Sustain level on "0", the tone on near to "0" & match the volume to my clean level - It gets a good drive. BUT again not like the SVT2 cranked...... would LOVE to find a pedal that DOES do that sound!;)

Just as a afterthought. I used the SVT2 with my New NV215 last Sat nite-at a coporate gig(but one where they Knew our band & loved it & wanted us to "go louder" -they kept chanting- We were pretty loud-didn't wanna go too loud onstage as our mixer was keeping things cool out front-thru FOH PA- But I was able to push the SVT2 up to around 4 & 1/2 vol. ( can push the vol. a bit more than w/ the NV610- as the NV215 is a bit quieter a cab) & as the stage was nice & big, we had a GREAT sound ONSTAGE(as well as FOH). I was able to really get the rig pumping-w/out annoying our Keyboardist(a LOOONG story ...I've already gone into) So I was able to really get a "test" of the NV215.
It sounds SUPER w/ the SVT2(& w/ the V4BH) - quite similar to the NV610- but the li'l Hi freq driver really suits the Funk stuff we do & doesn't sound NASTY when I add some o'drive-like tweeters usually do IME. As w/ the NV610- it has all the clarity that I've never experienced previously to Berg's NV's, Plenty of punchiness & a good round, but tight, 15" sound! LOVE it!!! Can't imagine meself selling the NV610 tho ;-( !!!!!!
What a dillemma(spellchack anyone!????) NV215 for the Funk/soul/old sch.R N B band & NV610 for the classic rock band????????
Great cabs-the both... can't say which is better or even which I like best! BOTH!!!!
BUT they BOTH DO sound better w/ the power of the SVT2 into 'em rather than the V4BH-even tho that sounds great thru 'em both too!

Hi Thanks rodl

just picked up on this thread perhaps already covering some of the territory

http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=441938&highlight=svt+overdrive

i am still not sure I trust the sans amp vt pedal. what goes wrong for me with it is the speaker simulation and pre amp stacking, i.e : an svt simulation sent into a real svt amp

infact I have had many bad experiences on other amps trying to use my sans amp into the amps own preamp, going direct to the power amp did not help either. In the studio its the bomb though.

the only cabinets that seem to enjoy a light bit of sans amp IME have been sealed ampeg 10" cabs. of which I unfortunately have none.

the closest so far for me for light dirt is the digitech bad monkey, a $40 pedal.

and whilst it nearly nails it the budget pedal sadly does not reach all the way up or all the way down. although I am thinking of getting it modded

I'll keep you chaps posted with my experiences

greets
J

I love it when this thread pops back up!

I just recently went through the same process some of you are going through now. We practice pretty loud, but I still only have my volume set at 3 to maybe 3.5. I wanted to get that overdrive sound I get when I'm abouve 5. After a few days of research reading every thread I could find on TB I decided on the Fulltone Bassdrive. I've only used it at 2 practices so far, but so far so good. It can do the subtle, always on overdrive and has a boost channel to get more grit for when you want it (kinda like 2 pedals in 1). It's also a very versatile pedal with lots of possible combinations to get that tone you're looking for.

How many of you are using a Fulltone Bassdrive with your SVT-II? Any setting suggestions?

Another thing I was considering was getting a foot switch for the EQ. Since I usually don't use the graphic EQ I was going to see if I could dial in a grittier tone and use the level selector to get the volume to match. I think all that would do is get more drive out of the pre, not the power OD we are after. I don't know. It was a thought, but I just went ahead with the bassdrive.

Read my review on the Sansamp Bass VT. It will do what you want it too. Kringle77

Thanks kringle77

how does that pedal sound going into your amps pre amp? everytime I plug my bddi into my SVT preamp it sounds really strange like there is just way too much eqing going on

and if I turn the blend down it just messes with my basses dynamics,

if they (tech 21) made a pedal without the speaker simulation in it or the ability to turn off the speaker simulation this might work with my SVTs own pre amp better?

NV215 & NV610 Rod......

I Hate you (In the envious kind of way).....

Man, Hook them puppies together and I'll be hearing you in Canberra!!!!

Rock on!!

Hope that works :D:hyper::bassist:

Yeah I'd LOVE to have 'em BOTH going at some gigs-but there's only a cuppla places here where I could even FIT let alone need the volume  BUT....still..................:spit:

Understand what U mean re the BDDI-sounding like too much pre amp stuff goin on! Searchin.......
