Ampeg SVT-II appreciation thread

I just got a very nice and clean SVT-II!:hyper:

is there anyone of you gentlemen that could send me the service manual for this amp?

this amp sound very nice, but it is a lot less loud than my SVT MTI (I think the power tubes are at the end of life), so when I will bring it to a tech, I will have him verify if my SVT-II has all the mods/upgrades of the connectors.

Hey Bill...you know this rig a little eh? New grille cloth and it's got a new caster cart from Fliptops, too. I have another '73 cab about 100 away on the serial number that I'm getting ready to restore but I doubt I'm going to do the tolex as well as you did this one.

When I get it done I'll try to post up both cabs along with the totally overkill SVT-300 power amp that I just had to have. :bassist:

When I tour the UK/Europe I get lucky and get those amps all the time...much more rare in the US, I'm afraid. Best bass guitar amp ever made, IMO

Howdy fellas, I'm a new guy around here and I finally got a chance to chime in.. I picked up a SVT II three days ago and it was instant love. It's in almost new condition and I swear when I turned it on that "new smell" came floating out of it! All was great with the honeymoon until I turned it on last night and after 5-10 min of playing there was a pop and then just a static sound and no output:(
Anyone ever have a similar experience? Any idea's what that's all about?

Take it to your local service tech. He'll tell you whats wrong with it. It's not uncommen for an amp that old to need service anyway. ;)

These models have a problem with broken solder joints on the main PCB. Ask around in your area; there will be some guy who has the best reputation in town working on SVTs. Don't go to a beginner.

was having another weird problem with my svtII, my tech retubed it and checked it all out about 6 months ago. said it was real clean and seemed fine after he cleaned the effects loop jacks.

started having a weird problem with it, after about 10 minutes of running the signal would get real weak. if i flipped it on standby and then off standby it would work fine usually. did it at practice last time and then i left it on for another 2 hours and had no problems at all out of it.

tech said it sounds like an intermittent working tube.
i was thinking maybe had a bad solder joint, so i just pulled it apart and checked stuff out.

pulled the preamp tubes which i replaced about 6 months ago, and the tung sol tube in v3 had a dead channel (dead triode?) when i put it in my phono preamp at home...hoping swapping a different tube in there will make it reliable again.
the 12ax7 in the power section and the ones in V1 and V2 played fine in the phono preamp.

Have another SVT-II on the way! Finally!! Will post more info and pics once I receive it! This one will never leave as I learn from my mistakes of selling the other two I have had.

Also, picked up an SVT-IIp as well! Got it in and trying to figure out a normal channel hum.. Bright channel works great. Wait on a schem from Ampeg for this pre-amp as my schems for the SVT-II np schem is much different. It's from 93 according to the assembly stickers..

the svtII got 5 or 6 sets on it this week.
no problems at all with it, so seems that tungsol tube was causing the most recent problems.

one question, let a dude play through my svt the other night and i noticed when he ran a real hot signal through it a red light would light up by the eq sliders on the face of the amp...never noticed that before.
What does it mean? clipping light or something?

that's correct. the owners manual states it this way:

"the LED will flash whenever the EQ section is in danger of being overdriven and close to clipping: reduce the Level or Frequency controls until the LED stops flashing."

The new SVT-II is finally in, and a pic for your enjoyment!

Preamp tubes are (3) Audio Classic Premiums 12ax7a's, (1) Hot Rod SLM 12ax7a, (1) Hot Rod SLM 12au7a and (1) Amperex 12au7a.

Power tubes have no markings except "OTK 55". Anyone have more info on these power tubes by chance?


***EDIT** Ok, the power tube may possibly be Sovtek's. I can an "S" on on a few and one has the last letter left before the OTK mark and it is a "K"....


It is in very good shape except for being dusty inside. :bassist:

We played a charity gig about two weeks ago with a bunch of other bands. As with every gig like this, time was of the essence so we had to get off stage fast. I have a system of removing my stuff and I do it rather quickly but it was obviously not quick enough for the "stage manager" who decided to "help" me out. He grabbed my SVT, whisked it away and, pretty much without any care put my face down on the concrete gouging the handles. Needless to say I came unglued and left him little rear end to sit on! This is why I never let people mess with my stuff. My baby's scarred now!:crying:
