Ampeg SVT-II appreciation thread

A few months ago, I decided to revisit a classic movie from my youth, the first Wayne's World. During the Alice Cooper concert scene, I spot on stage that the bass player is using an SVT-II nonpro. That movie came out in the early 90s, so that was about the time that Ampeg was making the amp.

yep... this is just what the dr. ordered. literally. hauling around my Emperor 6x10 was killing me. the Mesas are far more portable and I'm getting some much-needed grit and midrange bite to my sound. I'm thinking at some point I might get have the drivers reconed to 15B's. there's a guy here in Houston who does great work for SO cheap.

I undertand, I really want a Bergantino 610 for my big rig. Is there an update about Emperer? I saw here and on another site that they are restructuring their business. Don at Low Down sound does impressive work and I really like my Faital loaded 115 and may have Don build me a 610 down the road.

I've not heard anything new from them, no. I did a little digging around about the state of the company when I was deciding whether to buy or have cabs built for me but was unable to find anything about whether this "restructuring" is a permanent thing or not. there's another Chicago company building cabs in that style now. they're called Dictator (I see what they did there.. harharhar) but the cabs were just too large for my needs. cool lookin' though.

I'd like to add my SVT II to the appreciation list. This is a clean 1989 model bought recently from a fellow TB'er. With the SVP CL in front of it, I get the advantage of a gain/master setup, ultra low select, tuner out, and a mute switch. The tone is truly inspiring.

Just got a nice condition 1989 SVT-II for a nice price.

It sounds great, but maybe a little lacking in highs or high mids. Maybe I need a retube? Preamp or power tubes? I'm new to tube amps, so please educate me...
What is a good (affordable) set of tubes that will bring this amp to life? I don't want a lot of breakup, I like a powerful clean headroomy tube sound, with lots of highs and mids, both low and high.

I just bought an svt II non pro from 91, made for Europe, and i took it to a amp tech, that's also quite a well respected local custom amp builder, and he told me that the amp schematics shows that it should have 6x12ax7 in the preamp, and no 12au7. Does anyone know if there were any ampeg svt II non pro amps made for euope that had only 12AX7 tubes in the preamp?
Also do you know where I could find the schematics for the svt II non pro? Thank you!

i think it should be 3 12ax7 tubes in the preamp, and two 12ax7 and a single 12au7 in the power section.
it's labeled in there if you pop the lid off of it.

There are 3 12aX7s in the Preamp... Then 1 more 12aX7 in the Power Amp section and 2 12aU7 . Total should be 4 12aX7s and 2 12aU7 plus 6 6550s
