Ampeg SVT-II appreciation thread

It's hard to see in the pictures just how raked over it is.

That looks totally fixable to me. The nuts inside the case are hard to get to if I recall but if you were going to replace it anyway, you'd have to get into the case.

You may be able to gently bend it while in place, then touch-up the paint. The rack ear you can bend pretty easily.

Yeah I'm going to have to straighten it out, the handle company I contacted has a minimum order quantity of 50 @ $9.95 each.

I did manage to straighten the ear a little, but it started to bend up the rest of the plate towards the bottom where the bezel is thin, I think I have it good enough to let it go. At least until I get it apart and can have it put in a vise. During the same time handle repair would happen.

I have a rackmount SVT, early SVT-II... great amp.

I fetched that amp from a dutch guy, and while test driving the amp with my Rick he plugged his P-Bass into the other input (bright), and we played both basses at the same time, over the same amp/cab, at the same time. That was astonishing, I had no idea that was even possible. I always thought this was an either/or decision.

While I'm positive that it is possible I still wonder if this is intended or if it can damage the amp. Maybe someone here has experience with that.

I agree with Rod. My amp tech even confirmed its totally safe to use both of my SVT-II inputs simultaneously, he said they act as a simple mixer.
I didn't have a Rick-O-Sound, but I used a splitter to patch my pedals into my Bright input, and a clean/direct line into the Normal input. It blended the 2 signals and worked fine.

That's exactly what I plan, run one pickup directly into the normal input and the other pickup with my pedals to the bright input. Since I have an EQ pedal it should be easy syncing the volumes to where I want them.

Dave Ryan him self checked out my SVT-II Pro this morning. I dropped it off with 10 vintage GE 6550's(the ones I was hoping were barely used out of an old PA system that was decommissioned decades ago) for a checkup and retube for the power section.

He cleaned all the jacks, touched up some weak solder joints, found one of the transformers was loose, tightened it down, replaced a few missing screws here and there, and matched up the best he could 6 of those old tubes. He said he had to bias it a little on the cool side, but its still hitting 300 watts output. He recommended a new matched set of tubes, he is afraid if I push those old used GE's too hard they won't take the abuse. He recommended just a cheap set of JJ's. I'll ask about Tung-Sol reissues also when I pick it up. I'm sure either will do fine.

It's a bummer to find out all those tubes I was able to score didn't turn out to be much good, since they were such a good find. at least I got some good preamp tubes out of the find.

Picking it up when I get off work in a couple hours.

I am the fortunate owner of the very first SVT II pro head ever produced. Serial number 001/250. I actually won this in a national contest in 1993. 144 stores nationwide, with about 133,000 entries ( or thereabout ). It was shipped to me at one of my local music stores in the day, and one of the Ampeg reps that came in said it was the first time a serial number 001 left the factory. I have played it very little in the following years. Including a grundorf road case I have it mounted in, this was the heaviest piece of equipment my old band had...100lbs. Absolutely incredible sound from this beaute of an amp. It is in immaculate original condition, not a mark, scuff, or scratch anywhere !!! I only play it on occasion now. I have NO idea what it might be worth, but it isn't going Anywhere !

Are you saying that you have the first "transition" amps from the SVT-II to the SVT-II Pro.. I have seen a few for sale.. almost picked one up last year, but we could not come to a agreement on the sale!

I think the community here would love to see detailed photos of your amp.

more questions.

Is it normal for one of the big transformers to run warmer than the other????????????? One is warm, the other is cold, like no warmth at all. Just testing things and noticed after shutting it down and popping the lid to check some things.

from the front of the amp, the left one is dead cool, the right one is warm.

Exactly what it sounds like. SVT II Pro in a non-pro chassis.

Actually yes it is a rack case/chassis enclosure, but not the same configuration as an SVT II non-pro. Once they switched to the II Pro, the tube configuration changed and the (6) 6550's are grouped in a 3x3 config instead straight line of power tubes in the back. The transformers were moved to a vertical standup lay out (as opposed to the non pro horizontal mount). And the II Pro has more pre amp tubes in a different layout. The SVT II Pro Premier is the same as the II Pro. The II non pro is a beast of it's own.....

The face plates resemble each other with similar fonts and same machined flat layout. They use the same faceplate in the blue label II Pro years as well before going to the more modern rounded front faceplate around 98-'00 possibly?.
