Ampeg SVT-II appreciation thread

I picked up an SVT II (non-pro) once, but I think the one I played may have been a "lemon". It came with kt88s instead of 6550s, and seemed to really lack headroom, warmth through an Ampeg 810. I like grind, but my particular amp sounded very boxy, harsh, etc. At the time, I thought it could be due to the kt88s. I probably should have had a tech look at it, but decided to move it on instead. That said, Ive always wanted to try another one that was in great shape. Unfortunately, its not always feasible to try amps out before buying. However, these do seem to have a good resale value.

It sure does. But that's stuff for the Super Bassman thread.
I loved the II's single vol (no gain/master ) & getting it to 10.30 - 11 o'clock J-U-S-T on the edge of the power tubes giving up a little bit of crunch. Play soft- clean. ..dig in- bit of dirt.
That said, I usually play clean but getting just at that spot where you've got a bit of crunch when you want it is certainly very sweet. And the SVTII did it beautifully. Strangely enough. ...so does the Aggy TH500
