Ampeg SVT-II appreciation thread

frankieSVT.jpg

I wonder if anyone can help. I’ve had a few trouble free blissful gigs with my SVT-II but the other night practicing at home I detected a hum and intermittent popping noises. The hum seemed to be slowly getting louder so I turned the amp off. I then reseated all the tubes then the amp ran perfectly for the rest of the night.
Yesterday the hum returned but only when the graphic EQ was switched on, silent when bypassed.
I figure I’ll need to take the amp to a tech, but wondering if anyone can please shed light on a possible cause, and tell me which preamp tube is related to the Graphic EQ section?

Mattwear:

Do you still get the hum noise if your EQ's Level fader is centered/only adjusted half way up?

Did you already try re-adjusting all the EQ's faders to see if one just has a certain position that's causing the hum?

PS:
I've had Issues with the Graphic EQ in/out Switch needing to be cleaned on my SVT-II (non-pro).
When It was acting up, I could usually get it to function correctly again by repeatedly pushing it off & on.

I moved the faders around and centered them all together but this didn’t have an effect on the hum sound. It was a constant hum when the EQ button was on, and not when the button was off. You could be right about it being the EQ on/off button... weird, though, that this fault coincided with the overall noise that occurred earlier (that seemed to be fixed by reseating the tubes).
I’ve got it booked to see a tech next week so I’ll post the outcome.
Thanks all.

You can count me in !

I finally grabbed an SVT II here in Switzerland. Serial number is TN2YEA0015, which dates it November 1992.
I played a bit with it before buying it. It sounds to be in a good state. Sound is good. Power tubes have been changed about a year ago; they're KT88.
Brought it for a checkup to a renowned tech (Alligator Music, in Montreux), cause you're never too sure with those beasts.
I will post pictures when I get it back.

This seems like there may be a problem with the preamp tube that runs the graphic eq. I am not sure, but it should be v3 or 4. I f you have any spare 12ax7 tubes, try swapping those one at a time and check if it has any influence on the hum.

I had good luck with a gain problem with extended tube rolling in the preamp.

Brought my SVT II to an outdoor gig yesterday. I hadn’t used it live with my upright bass before so I figured I’d try it out. I’ll bring it to future gigs if I know I’ll have the stage space.

I ended up putting the rack on the ground next to the cab since something in the rack case was rattling and distracting me.

Nice score.

It looks like you're going into a 410HE which is 8 ohms. The SVT II needs a 2 or 4 ohm load which means adding another 410HE or using a different 4 ohm cab.

You are correct...the guy I bought it from sold the other one.
I havent used it yet cause of the preamp issue..got a pair of jj 12ax7 coming in tomorrow hopefully that's it!

I might have to hook it up along with my 8 ohm 410xlt Eden cab
