LOL! Actually, my Sadowsky SA200 and Trace Elliot V8 have done a lot to help curb my GAS. Plus, Tim has an excellent point about going vintage. Still, I'm going to try and give one a listen, if I can.

When I saw the cost, I was flabbergasted. Street will be around $2k, I take it? Why, when you can get an original for $1300 or so? What extra are you paying for? New tubes, better handles, and a DI out? When these boys start showing up used, more people will be interested, I bet.

If it were going to go for the same street price as the SVT-Classics, it wouldn't be a big deal. But an extra $400 or so seems a bit much.

Just curious- Where are you seeing used Blue Line SVTs for $1300? i am seeing black line SVTs (the ones with the toggle switches) fetching a *minimum* of $1300 on ebay these days and most of them are in rough cosmetic shape & need a tune up or tubes.

as a note, I have been watching this auction on ebay. Its a "local pickup only" and over in about 2 hours. Any guesses to a final selling price? :)

Ive been watching the same auction. If i had it in my pocket id give at least 3500. but thats at least 2000 miles for me.

note: when i started typing this the auction was around 2500...now its at $3,051.99


also...im going to buy a new amp in about 2 weeks. my budget is not an issue and i would be greatly apprecitive if ampeg would put the VR on their website. I need to know when and how much i can get one for. if im spending 2 grand i was considering a heart rock glockenklang. any suggestions?

It closed at almost $3600, but I guarantee that if they would have split it all up and offerred shipping on the heads, they would have gotten more.

FYI, The VR lists at $2799. i imagine they will post info soon.

You can get the Bergantino NV610 for $1029 USD, cheaper, lighter, sounds like the old 810's. Do a search, it's well regarded. :)

No offense to Ampeg, but I agree. Even if the head is all that it promises to be, I would still pair it up with a Berg NV cab (while they're still around at least).

If I'm going to have to pay 2K for a new Ampeg head (and believe me, it's not imminent) it had better sound as good or better than my '76. If they got that right and mine blows up, I'd consider it. I'd also take a good look at some $1400 used ones before going that far.

If they got it right, they'll sell.

Well, numerous reasons. As said before, the vintage SVT's are very hard to get outside the USA, and you'll need to mod them voor 220 volts. Secondly, I guess many professionals will be willing to pay extra for an amp which is new (more reliable?) and with guarantee. Others want an amp that looks perfect and don't know that the old SVT's can be refurbished excellent.

Many people don't like buying second hand and even more people don't even know brands like Schroeder and Bergantino, even though they could afford it. If this one is marketed well, Ampeg could sell quite some.

By the way, I also heard old tube amps are not engineered very well, meaning in case of a short circuit your bass or the amp externals could come under high voltage. Is that true? If so, they'll probably have that solved with this one as well.

Even though, I agree the street price is very high. Maybe they will lower in half a year or so.

VERY special thanks to Psycho Bass Guy for all of his advice, suggestions, overall help, and tons of patience with my 3 billion PM's and non-stop questions.

It got a new power tube set (Sovtek KT-88's), all new preamp tubes (12w7's and 12DW7's are J/J, C64, and 12BH7's are NOS), a new power transformer, all new cap kit, and a few resistors have been replaced too. It is 100% ready to rock, and I couldn't be happier with it.

Man these things are loud.....I can't get past 5 on the master without it becoming painfully loud in the living room.

I surprise myself sometimes :)

Even with all the headaches and expenses, I am into it about the same as the RI's are going to be street price. Add to the fact the vintage ones are appreciating in price as quick as they are, I wouldn't hesitate to go the same route again. What are the odds someone could have as bad of luck as I had?

My 69 or 70 SVT I bought a few years ago for a little over 500 in bad shape, I was able to get it going with maybe $200. Cosmetically it isn't perfect but electrically and mechanically it is. With another 100 to 200 I could get retolexed and it would look amazing. I have a quick simple website with some pics of it here: Invalid Link Removed
