Ampeg SVT-VR

Not sure if this was mentioned earlier, but the SVT-VR has preamp out and power amp in jacks, as well as a slave out. Very useful if you want to try your other preamps with this monster power amp. Imagine a V-type or Alembic through it! :)

The cabs are made out of plywood.

I wish this rumor of inferior cabinets would go away. The above is an Ampeg quote. My 410HLF cabinet is all plywood EXCEPT the divider...which is STRONGER and thicker man made material used for bracing.

This is what I did!
I have a new NV610 being built as we speak, No offense to the Ampeg 810 it sounds incredible but 1 I don't drive anything it fits in, we'll I do but that's all I can get in the car. And 2 it's hard to get replacement original speakers for either my 69 or 75 cab. The Bergie can handle both my vintage SVT's as well as my PV classic 400 and it's a hec of alot easier to move and get in and out of the car or truck by myself!

Not quite...

There is a change in materials going on at the moment, due in part to Katrina fallout, and also due to some added buying power after the merger with Loud. Which changes to what materials I don't know yet. Certain building materials, including OSB material, have become very pricey.

Not all cabinets are made of the same materials. Some cabinets are and have been plywood all along.

The other thread dealt with past cabinets which were OSB as stated there. I wouldn't have mentioned it there, except to correct some misconceptions concerning the nature of the materials.

Ok, after seven pages of reading (learning), I've come to the conclusion that the Vintage SVTs are just like the newer CLs, but cleaner sounding? If that's true, than I WILL have one, cause that's the only reason why I bought the 4-Pro instead. Also, can you buy the Vintage speaker covers for the 610HLF? If I get the head, the cab's gotta match...

The CL design is quite different from the original SVT design. The VR is quite similar to the original SVT design. Did you read this?

"Anaheim, Calif.— January 19, 2006, NAMM: For more than 50 years, Ampeg has been designing products for astute and discriminating musicians around the world. For 2006, Ampeg is reaching into its illustrious past to offer the SVT-VR, a vintage reissue of the highly sought after 1970’s “blue-line” SVT head.

With the new SVT-VR, the Ampeg engineering and product development teams had one primary goal—get as close to the coveted tone of the “classic” SVT as possible. As a result, the preamp stage, power section, and even the rocker switches of the new SVT-VR emulate the exact signal path, tone, and vibe of the original rock ‘n’ roll workhorse.

“The original ‘blue-line’ SVT has a tremendous legacy,” explained Ampeg Product Manager, Tommy Wilson. “It remains one of the most respected and sought-after Ampeg products of all time. For years, artists at all levels have been asking us to re-issue the vintage design. So important was their desire to recreate the classic SVT sound, that the Ampeg development team enlisted the help Dennis Kager, a member of the original Ampeg QC team and operator of a New Jersey-based restoration facility specializing in vintage SVT heads.

“Having been affiliated with Ampeg products for nearly four decades, I’m very encouraged by Ampeg’s commitment to the original design and their desire to accurately recreate its sonic signature,” commented Kager. “I’ve long known that there is a tremendous market for this product and I’m honored to have been involved in the development of the vintage reissue.”
The all tube SVT-VR amplifier is driven by a total of six 6550 power tubes for massive power and tone. In addition to the 70’s style dials and rocker switches, the SVT-VR’s preamp circuitry has been faithfully recreated to match the original. Even the classic blue graphics are there—affirming Ampeg’s commitment to the amp’s legacy.
The Ampeg SVT-VR is currently available and carries a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $2,799.00. "

The VR has a lot of clean headroom and will growl when pushed. To me it has more "air" in the sound than the CL... its more present. It different than the CL, that is for sure & undoubtably some people will prefer the tone of one over the other. I am curious if the CL will be discontinued if the VR is a hot seller.
