Ampeg !!

Ya, I'll totally pass on the Eden, thanks ;)

Ahh, but the power of the mighty Eden can also be married to the mighty power of Ampeg. :D

I think some people dislike ampegs because they really don't colorize the sound of your bass much.. you just get great amplification with some tube creaminess.
Seriously? I moved away from Ampeg because Ampeg sounds like Ampeg and everything you do through it ends up sounding like Ampeg. That is the definition of colored sound. It sounds great but I just got sick of it over the years. I used to be one of the only cats in my circle with a 70's SVT. I bought mine for $450.00 including the 8x10. Everyone was running GK 800's and really early SWR. Now the silver grills are everywhere. It was time for me to move along. But y'know I probably will be back at some point. That's the nature of the Ampeg.

Anyone ever use a solid state SVT450 ($299)..........i'm trying to decide between one and a B2 ($219) because I need a quick backup.

I have played a couple ss svts and they all sound terrible in my opnion. I cannot remember which ones but I have played through an svt 1000 a bunch. It sucks a little more each time.

I got the SVT450 for $250 with a cover too! Sounds kinda thin run through a 4-12 and a 4-10 but I still have more tweaking to do. I may try it with another 4-12 and a 1-18 and see if it smothes out and gets more buttery!

Sound is invisible so making visual references to a particular sound is subjective at best. But if I have to use the word 'color' to describe an attribute of a particular amp, I have to say that Ampeg did one hell of a job at catching their namesake sound with the affordable BA line.

A bass player that disapproves of high volume performances, like me, would be very happy with a tiny BA 108 if the Ampeg sound is at goal.

I agree with you, and regarding terms like "colored" and "uncolored," there are two thoughts that immediately come to mind:

1. Almost all amps that have a particular voicing with all knobs at noon can easily be made into one with flat or near-flat response simply by turning knobs. There are some exceptions...Ampeg is not one of them. I can get flat or near-flat response out of all of them by turning a knob.

2. The vast majority of people who use terms like "colored" or "uncolored" wouldn't recognize flat response if it bit them on the ass, so it's useless to even get into that discussion if you ask me.

Precisely,

I just like to use my little guy practically flat. I know that boosting the knobs all the way will give me more volume but that's not what I'm after.

I prefer to think that my true sound comes primarily from my hands. Of course, all the other technical ingredients (amp, bass, strings, pup configuration, etc.) play a big part as well.

I used to run my SVT flat as I could, it always rrtained that baked in "Ampeg sound." I could never get an uncoloured sound from my bass like a good DI.
