Amps you hate

Everything that isn't custom made... From Trace to that ashdown crap, I was informed that stuff really needs quality control. Hmm, then again, I played a Laney amp once, I did like it a lot, but that was in the 90's. I'd take that over Peavey, I'll admit..

I had an endorsement with Eden, but I don't care for it either, I gave it back..

Glockenklang... Played it once, it had no colouration, I'm not sure about it though. I need another listen..

I expect British bass amps to either break down, or sound weak. To me old SVT's, Gallien Krueger's, or Mesa Boogie's are the benchmarks.

I know a few "names" that get the **** for free. The quote I heard was "they blow the **** up all the time (the heads anyway)," good thing they get it for free...

I especially dislike Trace... It has one sound, I relate it to "cardboard."

Hmmm, I see you have a Laney.. That's interesting!

Hmmm, yes i have a Laney and it doesn' t really cut it, that's why I upgraded to a Trace Elliot V6 and that doesn't sound like cardbord to my ears:smug: .

This thread has been resurrected a year and a half since I last posted and I still don't like SWR Workingmans or the new Working Pro gear. Still can't stand anything with aluminum cones, Hartke heads and combos and now have added GK Backlines to the list.

I seem to like some of the British stuff though. I had a TE GP7M Preamp that I liked and I have played a few Ashdown that I really liked. I like British humor too.:)

The trace stuff is not on par with most of the American/German/Italian gear I've played. I know some "undercover" facts that support that statement.

I'll try some new stuff to see if there's a NOTICEABLE improvement, but I doubt I'll see anything substantial.

The Laney stuff was okay, as far as tone, but I want a warm, fat sound with a tight fundamental. Distorted clipping is unacceptable...

The brits aren't known for making bass amps worth a damn.. Ashdown falls WAY short of a good ol' Ampeg..
Sticking "bells and whistles," or "pretty lights" doesn't make up for a ****ty tone. That's Trace and Ashdown in a nutshell..

I was impressed with the italian bass stuff I heard while doing festivals over there. The potential was incredible!

The Brits seem to only make the stuff to cover a marketplace niche.

Hmm, I know a guy that blows up Hartke heads consistently, but the cabinets are more durable.. So I've been told.

my fav amps are also the amps i hate the most.....
all tube amps. :eek: yup, that's right.
i can't stand the inconsistency in tone.
as i work the amp, the tubes warm up, the sound changes,
the eq changes.....always starts off ok, then warms up as i play(even if the amp has been on for awhile on standby) and takes a few to develop into that beautiful rich tone. then it passes that wonderful stage into the
area that's not my ideal anymore. so... too damn inconsistent for me personally.
and i've owned a hella lotta tube amps. (actually, i'm sure i'll end up with another someday, 'cause i love them. confused yet? it's like a bad relationship i can't quit :rolleyes: ).
this is my extremely picky, anal side talking.... alot of these changes are barely noticeable live, but have daunted me in recording sessions both as a player and engineer (especially if doing overdubs or punching in and out to do a "fix").

Yeah, I found it funny that when I got an endorsement deal, I loved eden, Then i noticed myself tweaking all the time, and that I didn't really like the sound. The last straw was getting sciatica from carrying that **** around... I swear, a bad lower back is relative to having your testicle explode..
