An Aguilar Legend... Reimagined

The power module in the AG500 was an early Class-D-ish thing made by Tripath, who went bankrupt in 2007. I know they ended up unable to make more due to that. Re-jiggering the AG to fit a commodity Class-D module makes a ton of sense. There are lots of people (like me!) who loved the AG. I ended up having to get rid of mine after a few power module failures and repairs.

I've "moved on," so-to-speak, but I bet they'll sell a lot of them - especially if they come out with a two-channel. The distortion on the AG was probably the best bass distortion out there until the B3K came out.

This is WAY more exciting than anything in the ToneHammer family. I had an AG500SC-112 combo, and I've been thinking about finding another AG500 head, but this is way cool. I might even hold out till April for one of these!

Hopefully they have one at NAMM to try out. I'll be giving this a serious look!

I'm inclined to give this a good look, but if it is going to be a contender for my next amp, I am looking for something that can reliably handle a 2.7Ω load. My setup needs are different for every gig and I would like be able to run up to three compact 112's. A built-in HPF is the other feature that more MI amps are starting to include in the designs, and I'm hoping they decided to include this in the new AG model.

The AG has less of that typical TH vintage flavour, is definitely quicker with a bit more attack and has a slightly more modern tone.
It's not modern when compared to "real" modern amps (some of the Markbass stuff, Tecamp, Genzler, Epifani, etc.). It has a lot of that Aggie touch, just less than the TH.
If the TH is too slow - not quick enough, too wooly, too vintage, the AG is a great alternative.
I'd call the AG a great allround amp with a rock touch, if that makes sense.
All IMO.

I had the AG500 in a number of backlines and I liked it just fine. Better than the 751 actually (shhh! don't tell anyone), but I still wouldn't call the AG500 "legendary". Nice amp, and I bet this will sound closer to what I like than the TH500, but not likely to push the D800 out of backup status, and not as flexible as the D800+. Will be interesting to see the price point and hear it though...choices are a good thing and Aguilar is a great company.

Thanks for the description. Interesting, and I'd love to hear more. May do some reading here on the AG stuff.
