An Aguilar Legend... Reimagined

I'm interested, if I can try one out with my two SL112 cabs (and get it past my wife). I love my TH500 but I sometimes wish I could get just a bit more of a modern tone. I would just have to be careful not to fry my cabs! I suppose if I like it I could sell the TH500 to recoup some of the cost.

I will wait for more new Aguilar gear for 2017. I had a AG500sc that had great tone. But now I need quite a bit more clean headroom. Why is this new head only ~200 watts stronger than the TH 500 at 4 ohms ? I'm sure they've got their reasons.

I've been using this Aguilar DB 659 with absolutely superb results:

I will still support them as a company and I do like their products. I use a TH 500 for rehearsal with one of those cabs in the image above and like it very much. It could be that they've got more amps coming out.

I was a big fan of the AG500, but there was a protection circuit that would make it shut down if it detected any clipping, even from something like an outboard pedal. Hopefully they have come up with a solution for this, or at least the increased headroom will help. As for the TH500, as many have said it ran out of steam too soon when pushed hard. I've always been a fan of Aguilar but lately I've been happily using a GK MB Fusion 800. The GK has two things we'd all like to see on the new Aguilar...1) a tube preamp, and 2) a second channel...(plus the lights on the GK look way cool) I'm still excited about the new Aguilar...

The problem with 750/751 is that once you add the head case it's a 65-70 pound head. It's just not practical if you go direct most of the time.

AG700. . . . I'm disappointed it won't run 3 cabs. So, sadly, that's a fail for Aguilar and one up to the competition.

I've used a TH500 for several years. I'm the loudest bass player for yards around and that's with the Master between 9 and 10 o'clock. I can't imagine what use I'd have for another 200 watts but if this amp turns out to have the tone and heft of a hefty thing from hefty town I'll be reaching for the plastic.

Dammit. Just picked up a Subway (which kills) after whining for a long time about a TH7 or 800.

I loved the ToneHammer. Turned into a favorite. At 8ohms you only get 250, need a little more.

This looks right up my alley, a little cleaner

I am very interested in tonal comparison between both th500 and mesa subway series. I am deciding between the two, I also had an Epifany in my mind, but at my store they only had a performance 400 atm and I am afraid it will be to weak for me although it also had a pretty nice sound. But definitely thinner at the bottom and wider on hi mids as opposed to th350 I tried there (I like th sound, nice and smooth on the top and fat low mids, really cool). Then I also had the chance to try the mesa boogie subway d-800 and I didn't try it (********) and now I am also considering to buy it haha.

How do these two heads compare?

Thanks for info. Btw I will be pairing it up with a Barefaced Big Twin 2 cab.

Edit: ATM I own a GK1001RB-II and after comparing it to th350 and epifani performance 400 I definitely realised that the GK head sounds way to harsh for me and I much more prefer the aggie or epi sound. I tried all these heads into the tc electronic 410 and played over them with a custom shop fender 60's jazz bass.

For this reason, I am really not sure about the GK fusion heads. I like the looks a lot and the fact that it uses tubes but after holding one in my hands it definitely doesn't show the build quality of the GK RB series. The pots are really flimsy and feel much cheaper to touch as opposed to my GK RB 1001.

It's not modern when compared to "real" modern amps (some of the Markbass stuff, Tecamp, Genzler, Epifani, etc.). It has a lot of that Aggie touch, just less than the TH.
If the TH is too slow - not quick enough, too wooly, too vintage, the AG is a great alternative.
I'd call the AG a great allround amp with a rock touch, if that makes sense.

This makes it tempting, but I need head to head comparison with the Mesa D800/D800+, since that's what I was considering to replace the TH500.

Please keep in mind I was referring to the old AG 500 that I used for a few years. Unfortunately, I have no idea what the new AG 700 sounds like. Based on what Aguilar say on their website ('more low end') it probably has ... erm ... more low end than the AG 500, which was rather tight, quick and firm down low IMO, definitely different lows than the TH 500.
I'll certainly give the AG 700 a go once it's available in my neck of the woods.
