An audition requires you to play with a pick. Why?

A pro bassist needs to be able to play finger-style, with a pick, and slap well. You also need to know how to get musical results in many styles with each one, and why. If that makes no sense to you, fine, one less competitor for me and the others who can adapt to the dizzying variety in contemporary bass. To me, it is about getting good gigs.
I agree, but it sounds like these guys are looking for a pick only bass player to play the root of the cord.

Why does everyone assume that when a band wants their bass player to use a pick, it means they want them to play root notes? That's like saying that every pick-using bass player on TalkBass only plays root notes as well, which we all know isn't true. Seriously, stop reading so much into this when you don't know anything about the band.

because it's true the majority of the time.:)

pick players that hang around talkbass care about their craft, but the majority of pick players don't hang around here.

this thread should die.

CONSIDERING the type of ad, CONSIDERING the lack of information, CONSIDERING they don't care enough to say what kind of music they play, CONSIDERING how many bands there are of the type, there is a GOOD CHANCE that its exactly that. GOOD CHANCE. not DEFINITE. and thats that, anything else is reading too much into it.

I auditioned for a band and the lead lung said I put in too many notes on a cover song... "feeling all right" if I recall.
I asked the lung to sing the song in a different key LOL... Needles to say I didddn.t and did not WANT to get the gig*S* and yep as is most of the cases with bands like that, they didddnt go anywheres out side of the garrage*smirks*

You type funny. Oh well.

Anyway, you actually went to the audition, and they told you upfront what they wanted in their band, so you have the right to feel that way about them. The problem I have with, though, is that people are simply assuming that the band sucks just because they want a pick using bass player. Which I don't see as wrong. Of course they're allowed to ask for a specific player, it's THEIR band, if you don't like it just don't go the audition and don't whine about how much they're apparent trying to control you through a stupid ad.

Whic brings me to my second reason; people are trying to turn this band into some kind of dictator that is trying to control them. Which is sad in two ways: people are trying to make a problem out of nothing and assume the role of a victim, which is just pathetic; and the fact that even though people are saying how they don't want to be controled by the ad and play their own way, they're still being controled in the sense that they're letting the ad influence them so much, which makes them hypocrites.

It's all basically the same if you put up an ad that said "only finger pickers respond" or "only apply if you only use slap bass".

It just gets deeper and deeper.
:D

For all any of you know the people who placed the ad could be into the Dixie Dregs and Yes. The ASSUMPTION that you'd have to play roots is ridiculous... and fits in perfectly with this thread. You'd choose to ASSUME it because it MIGHT happen. Beats actually finding out.

Wow.

idk, I don't see the problem with the ad. They want a pick player, as said before, it's their band! They can dictate how they want. I consider myself a proficient player in both and wouldn't be bothered by the ad.

If I was truely interested in the band, I'd play as they desired and if it didn't work out, it didn't work out. It's not like it's the end of the world. There will always be other bands.

well i play with really nothing but a pick and there is certain types of music that calls for this nonsense i started off playing with my fingers but when i really got into playing faster more aggressive music then it was just all about the pick for me of course what im playing has no groove what so ever

Wow.

But you know Brad, the truth is out there. I want to believe that this is all a cover-up.

The issue is before you even join the band they already want to dictate to you how to play your bass ... I don't put up with that at all.

I once had an audition where they said no pick players allowed. I told them off.

I think a good bass player should learn picks, fingers, slapping, and any other method to play the bass, and then use what is best for the song.

completely agree. When I joined my current band during the audition process the band leader (who had recorded the bass parts on the record already) told me he used a pick for the recordings but didnt mind that I was playing with my fingers.

After getting accustomed to the feel of each of the songs, I started using a pick for the majority of them because they were poppy and high energy and, frankly, it sounded better.

I still play fingerstyle on one of our slower, atmospheric songs, and slap on another song. it just sounds better to that song, plus it lets me stretch my versatility muscles :)

But yeah, dictating that you MUST use a pick is the same thing as saying "if you do not have a P-bass and play through an SVT 8x10 then dont bother!"

not cool!

More gigs for us, I guess.

Absolutely. I have this conversation too often with bassists who have issues and just don't "get it". They get hired as a sideman and then bitch about how they're asked to play, what they're asked to play, what they agree to play for, create dissention because of all of this, etc.

Then they wonder how I stay so busy. Duh.
