Double Bass An Ehrlund blog, sort of

The honeymoon's over, players.

After a couple of short tours and a string of shows where the sound-guy couldn't give me *any* bass in the monitors, I'm feeling pretty down on the Ehrlund. I'm thinking about playing my next show with the Fishman (I know the venue, and I know the sound sucks.) It is seeming like the EAP can only be used in a minority of the venues/situations that I play, and should only be risked if I'm sure I'll get a proper sound-check.

I've used the EAP and Ehrlund Pre, (or Headway EDB-1)
on tour with Mary Wilson, the Sheldon Concert Hall here in St. Louis, Webster University ect. When feedback occurs, it's relatlvely easy to control. My bass is a 5/8 size Mirecourt. I used Evah Pirazzi Weich Strings into either a QSC K8 or Walter Woods Amp with a Audiokinesis TC-112.
Sorry the EAP isn't doing what you need it to.

Usual first thing to suspect is something in the chain being overloaded, check preamp and amp's channel input levels.

Man, this is what I'm thinking right now. My Full Circle performed marvelously over the weekend, without feedback, and the attack cut through the stage mix and allowed me to hear myself...

I'm starting to think that I should only use the EAP for low-volume, "non-rock" music...

Well, if someone told me that they play rock in a club setting, I wouldn't suggest the Ehrlund. I only play jazz, in a quartett, usually in outdoor settings, and in that context the Ehrlund is wonderful. AS usual no one solution works for everything and the Ehrlund's sensitivity which is what makes it great, is probably a downside in a club gig.

Yes, I agree. I don't think I'll get rid of the EAP, because it really shines in such settings...

Agreed, it's not going to be able to compete in a really loud setting, with all the instruments in close proximity. Fortunately, for me, that's rarely an issue. There is one band that I play in where I use my EUB, to get as close to the color of a Double Bass as I can. I love the band, but the percussionist uses an entirely electric set. It agitates the bass and causes my amp to feed back through the pickup. Oddly enough, it does work very well in a big band.

In a big band, the bass might have more sonic space that is unique to the bass, than in a rock band, where perhaps the guitar and/or keys are competing for the same frequencies. Just a theory. Of course, it only takes 1 too loud guitar player to ruin a mix..

Well, I just received an Ehrlund with preamp today. Sounded better than I anticipated but one thing struck me, the jack that was included from gollihur is a piece of junk. The 1/4" cord I plugged into it rattled and made intermittent connection and crackled like crazy on certain notes. You know, the sound that blows drivers. $600 bucks for the pickup and a free 50 cent jack makes no sense to me at all. I messed with it for 2 hours and found it to be more boomy than my RS mic at the sound hole. The RS mic sounds more woody too but does have some cavity sound that I don't care for. Jury still out. When I plugged my rs mic in to compare sound, I immediately liked it better. Now, back to playing with the Ehrlund. I did prefer the sound using the corner putty technique with the Ehrlund over having one center dab of putty. .... To be continued.....

Well that's the advantage of Gollihur's exchange program if if dosen't work for you then you can return it, minus the return shipping. I had a little Crown GLM 100 Condenser Mic that I used in conjunction with the Fishman Bass Blender. It sounded ok, but the nothing like the EAP and Ehrlund Pre Amp does on my bass. That's why I never even considered the RS mic. I use a standard Switchcraft Female 1/4" Extension Jack. It works fine.

If it works better, then it works better. I'm not one to futz around with a pickup or mic. Over the years, my experience has been that generally, on a particular bass, a pickup either works or it dosen't.
