analysis software recommendation?

Sometimes, in support of a more technical discussion, someone will post a graph of amplitude versus frequency or similar quantitative data. Can anyone recommend a software product that will allow me to do that sort of analysis?

I’d like to not only get a plot of my bass output directly, but I’d like to be able to send a post-compressor signal to the program, and then see how the response changes as I fiddle with attack, release, etc. Also, is it possible to send not only a post-compressor but also a post-eq or just post-amp signal? I’d like to see how the response changes with my amp’s eq settings, and of course I’d like to be able to hear the bass coming out of my amp as a I tweak settings.

I don’t mind buying such a product, but if there are free tools online available, please direct me to those too. And lastly, I'm a Mac user.

For Win boxes there's also Room EQ Wizard, which I like a lot. True RTA is my go-to though, as it does overlays and data archiving especially well.

Since you're talking about both frequency spectrum analysis AND dynamics processing analysis a simple spectrum analyzer will not accomplish all of your goals. My recommendation would be to buy a copy of DDMF's Plugin Doctor which you can run in standalone mode to test hardware. You won't be able to plug your bass in and see the results in real time, so you'll need to decide if having dynamics analysis is critical to what you're after. If it's not, then just grab Blue Cat Audio or Voxengo's free spectrum analyzer plugins and enjoy real time frequency analysis. If you need dynamics analysis, harmonic series analysis, Hammerstein analysis of non-linearities, etc. then Plugin Doctor is the standard.

Dan is an absolute treasure. Whenever he releases a video I watch it, even if I don't own, use or have interest in the plugin/gear he's discussing. I always learn something useful from his content.

Insight 2 from Izotope is on sale through today for $49... I've been having some issues with my release volumes and was looking at it. I watched this video and decided that the learning curve was more than I was up for. It seems you are looking for detailed info, this may be a good tool for you. $49 for an Izotope product seems like a great deal.

Hey Silky - for the OP’s case, wouldn’t he need a sweeping sine curve signal to generate a response across the frequency spectrum? Probably not practical to do this for bass guitar compared to, say, a bass amp or cab. Just curious…..

That’s why I suggested DDMF’s PluginDoctor. In hardware mode it handles that already, and more in fact. It’s not possible to use it to test the bass itself, but all of the hardware/gear is easy. For the bass and the gear, a spectrum analyzer is about as good as you can do.
