No. Jason came in at the end of the Puppets tour. In late 1986 and he actually played a bunch of gigs from the Puppets tour to fill in Cliffs spot so they could finish the tour. After that they recorded Garage Days Revisited in which Jason played bass and can clearly be heard just fine. And then they did Justice. Jason most definatly played on it but it was a combination of poor mixing (James and Lars basically mixed the entire album themselves - literally). Plus the way the guitars were recorded with a lot of layering and lots of low end on the EQ. Plus Jason used a combination of a Steinberger bass with a Gallien Krueger setup which he said didn't give a very pleasing result.

It was a combination of a lot of things but he definatly played on it.

As much of a travesty as it is that Jason's parts aren't present on it, there is a silver lining: it's easy to play along with.

It always killed me that they never released a "Jasonized" version though. Even when it was rereleased it wasn't remixed or anything. Putting Jason in the studio for a week at the end of the black album sessions with a decent rig and then letting someone who knew what they were doing remix it would have made me a very happy individual, and would have been no trouble for them.

So much for being all about the fans.

If that was the case, it would've been much more clever to ask him to simplify his parts rather than killing him in the final mix. :hmm:

As a further note on this subject, the bass on ...AJFA is actually at a reasonable level in the mix. It happens to be eq'd the same as the guitars i.e. no mids, and as a result it sits behind the guitars in a rather sheepish manner.

To hear this in effect, listen to the version of 'The Prince' off Garage Days, recorded on the Justice sessions. Every now and then Jason gets a little bass break which sadly serves to highlight the pathetic tone he was lumbered with.

I did those 2 summers ago and I've actually been thinking of going back and redoing it all now that I have much better gear and could definatly mix the tracks more realistically.
