It's all relative. If you're gigging, on your amp you'll always be fighting the size/weight vs power demons in your head. On your bass, the decision is easier (IMO).
Back in my band days, I couldn't afford a backup of either, so reliability was king. My all mahogany Cort PJ was a boat anchor, but reliable and versatile. My Amp was a Knight Electronics 50 watt Tube PA (I did carry spare tubes) and a single 15" Celestion reflex cab I built with my Dad we painted it with crincle paint and put chrome corners on it, it looked good good from 10 feet away (good, cheaper, & lighter than anything I could buy at the time).
I was making money with gear that was paid for, I was completely happy with it then.
FF 34 years... that bass would kill my back and neck now. That cab while decent, was as ugly as sin, and the tone controls on the tube PA were designed for voice, and were on the thin side for bass (I often used a pre-amp to compensate).
Now I have a Fender JP-90, a line 6 bass floor pod, and a Acoustic B100 (Mk I). This is a at home only rig, though it does get dragged around the house and outside a bit. In quality, playability, and versatility it's miles ahead of my old rig (though the B100 isn't much lighter than my old amp rig, and it's NOT modular).
I could easily club gig with this rig as is, and if the amp were mic'd the rig could play a decent sized venue. I am very content with it as is. The only real down side is its not a good recording or direct into a PA rig (something I'm not doing, so it doesn't matter to me). Best of all, my investment is low, no crying if chipped, broken, or stolen (well, except for the bass).
Back in my wedding band days, I would have killed for my current rig. I am content with it.
