Another "Best Metal Bass" & Gear Thread: DOOM/DRONE

So many votes for thunderbirds here, but I need details;

Any specific year?
Stock pups?
I hear the bridge is nasty. Is this an issue for downtuning?
Goth vs Regular? Either vs Pro?

Recent Epis are superb quality, stock pups do all you want, the bridge hasn't been an issue for me dropping down to C and B, standard works fine, can't imagine the others would be at all abd...

You need more strings. Definitely at least a 5er, I say 6. That low b (or lower) is where the doom comes from! Should be solid color, dark preferably.

I use a 05 Gibson ThunderBird, run into a Swollen Pickle and then a Russian Big Muff.
then that goes in to a 70's Ampeg V4 in to an Ampeg 410 and a 15.
the pedals aren't on for every song just parts of songs here and there in my Current Stoner/DOOM project.
in fact a lot of the time just straight into the amp with the gain ALL THE WAY UP is what I'm doing.
it's good and thumpy and cuts through the guitars that run Orange and Marshall gear.
any way my 2 cents.

Stoner stuff can sound like anything.

Thanks for the amp tips; it's an area I have relatively little information about. The Hartke 3500 and 4x10 were a right place, right time, right price purchase. Is tube a requisite?

They're nice, but you don't have to have them. Something that gets loud with a good dirt pedal in front of it would work. I imagine that Mesa's hybrid stuff, or Aguilar 750/751 would work pretty well. Ampeg's hybrid stuff might work. I can imagine using Ashdown solid state amps for doom.

Last time I rehearsed with my doom band, I rented a 4x12 cab and an old solid state Randall head (not enough room to schlep my regular rig). I just put a distortion pedal in front of it and bashed away.

Old peavey gear is loud and cheap. Gets some gnarly grind, too. Get a Peavey 2x15 (or two!), and a Mark series head, and I think you'd probably have a pretty good doom rig.

My Mark IV head and 215 cab from the 70's sound epic as all hell when distorted using effects. I really want a second one of the cabs for even more doom.

+1. I was watching a yoo-toob video and I'm pretty sure he had a bottle of nyquil taped to side of his amp with a straw sticking out, and was taking sips throughout the song.

He also has a nasty habit of puking on stage. If you listen to last fm and watch the image slideshows, it's like a big parade of Dixie Dave and long chains of glop dropping from his mouth.

Eugh.

I don't think it's about being sick. I think it's about being a drugged out, hyperactive metal-head on too many competing substances, playing hard, jumping around stage, and getting ill, and playing on.

He also, purportedly, shot himself in the foot by accident. It's on his website, methinks. Thats not fun, I bet

Seriously throwing up often will probably give him throat cancer or some other serious problem in the future due to the acid burning it. It's not smart and I doubt you would pull many chicks by puking every few minutes.

In case nobody mentioned it, "Green" amps were originally made for Peter Green (Greene?) of Fleetwood Mac as a play on Orange amps and his last name. Burnouts latched onto the name after the fact.

For what it's worth, I recorded an ep/album/whatever with a sludge/funeral doom project. I used a GK 400RB head into 2 Ashdown 1x15s. Big muff and Sansamp in the signal chain, really choking wave of distortion type sound. I used an Ibanez SR406 I used to own - it was the only decent bass I had at the time, but it worked fine - it's not renowned for its low end but as someone said earlier, it's more about the amps/cabs/effects than the bass.

All this was probably negated by the awful recording, but I guess it fit into the vibe. Anyway, have a listen below.
