Another Craigslist Ad -- hire this man!

It wasn't just the audio, it also had to do with things such as the weight bearing capacity of where the stage was set.

As David Lee Roth said in an interview....

"The folks in Pueblo, Colorado, at the university, took the contract rather kinda casual. They had one of these new rubberized bouncy basketball floorings in their arena. They hadn’t read the contract, and weren’t sure, really, about the weight of this production; this thing weighed like the business end of a 747.

I came backstage. I found some brown M&M’s, I went into full Shakespearean “What is this before me?” … you know, with the skull in one hand … and promptly trashed the dressing room. Dumped the buffet, kicked a hole in the door, twelve thousand dollars’ worth of fun.

The staging sank through their floor. They didn’t bother to look at the weight requirements or anything, and this sank through their new flooring and did eighty thousand dollars’ worth of damage to the arena floor. The whole thing had to be replaced. It came out in the press that I discovered brown M&M’s and did eighty-five thousand dollars’ worth of damage to the backstage area.

Well, who am I to get in the way of a good rumor?"

The brown M&M idea was really pure genius in ensuring that the rider was read thoroughly.

12k worth of damage still seems like a crappy move.

No offense, but you don't get it. The poster is (probably) not bitter or disappointed about music. They are passionate about music to the point of making up situational satire, and posting it on a "stage" where they can be sure the target audience will (probably) get the joke. It's mimicry/pantomime satire.
Humorists have a long and perilous history of pushing boundaries to find laughs. The web just provides a novel space for a new form of modern comedy.
I don't think this particular joke is that funny, but that's pretty clearly what this is.... A joke.

No offense taken, though I’m certain I get it much better than you’re giving me credit for. I understand it’s a lampoon. And pretty un-funny by now, not to mention cliche, trendy, derivative. These kinds of CL jokes have about reached Best Bass For Metal status.

Close -- Van Halen, apparently, was one of the few bands to put on a huge audio show that relied on contracted sound at many venues. Buried in the middle of the technical rider was a statement that in the dressing room, there should be a bowl of M&M's with all the brown ones taken out.

Given how much they were trusting the contracted technical people to get all the audio equipment right, if there were brown M&M's in the bowl, or if there were no M&M's at all, he'd order a total recheck of the technical chain. He used the M&M's as an indicator of the care the technical staff had taken in reading the technical rider. It was his way of ensuring quality control with a simple leading indicator.
I always thought the bowl had to have green M&Ms and nothing else. Shows what I know. But, really the blue ones are what should be removed. Ever seen real food that color? I rest my case.

A masterpiece!

Big +1

That's *EXACTLY* what my take away was. I *LOVED* that ad! The author was obviously having a great time writing it, laughing every second! He is totally making fun of the CL crazies! That comical ad he came up with is very representative of the knuckle-dragging under-evolved neanderthals that the craigslist musicians section brings to the table.

Years ago, I took a chance and posted in CL seeking accomplished musicians to form an Eagles tribute band. OMG, you should have seen the bozos that auditioned! Not one of them was a normal human. One guy wanted me to learn a new song he just got through writing about penguins. No joke! My wife and I still laugh about that to this day. I'm still trying to figure out how he managed to develop sufficient motor skills to walk in an upright position.

blue isn't a natural color? Have you looked at the sky? Or a blueberry? Or horseshoe crab blood?

Exactly!
Imagine what kind of sad individual has no better place to express himself than craigslist.

CL musician adds are scraping the barrel of your local scene for sure. I didn't get a gem like your penguin guy, but I did play for about a month with one of the best examples of the Dunning Kruger effect I have ever personally met. BL considered himself a highly skilled musician, yet never quite had any of his gear fully functional. Each week he would text new songs we were to work on, then on rehearsal day state that his medical conditions kept him from practicing those songs. The Icing on this cake was him continually bringing in talented try outs with his CL add pimping the free rehearsal space. "Rehearsals" were in a very small tweaker shed in the drummer's back yard made from random bits of scrap wood. The looks on those guys faces as they got a load where we were playing was priceless!

It was free, right down the street from my house, and a chance to try out my new rig with a drummer so I put up with it for a month longer than I should have. I STILL see that dude's CL adds every now and then and it cracks me up every time. It is well worded and seems completely legit, but would be perfect fodder for one of these satirical mock adds.

P.S. I used CL to find my current band. Very aware of the irony stating CL adds are scraping the barrel while using it myself. Maybe my band and I got lucky.... or maybe it just reinforces my statement. :D

VtN: I loved every word of your post! That bit about the small tweaker shed made from random bits of scrap wood cracked me up royally!!! (almost to the point of having tears in my eyes!) :roflmao: :roflmao: :roflmao:

And that last point you made (your PS) is true. It's all about finding the diamonds in the rough (and oh man....there's a plethora of "rough"!). But yeah, 20 years ago when I was putting together a YES tribute band, I actually found a couple of musicians via CL that fit the bill!
