The thing is, anybody who comes off as "thinking (they're) the next coming," or is a "d!c$f@ce," isn't self-aware enough to realize it....otherwise they wouldn't act like that. The only thing that ad is going to weed out are good, professional-acting, serious musicians.

I think the effect is exactly the opposite - they are signaling the type of person they are looking for, in effect announcing that they are actively not egotists, and are looking for the same type of person. Their definitely is a difference I think.

I get what you're saying, but in my experience egotists are rarely self-aware enough to realize that they are, themselves, the people this band is trying to avoid. I can just picture the first rehearsal... "yeah, man... I'm so glad I found you guys' ad on CL... The last four bands I was in were a drag 'cause all the other guys were lame.... "....

... And never having a clue that the ad-respondent was the problem in his previous bands.
