Another Noob amp thread

Hey, I'm new here and to bass in general. I'm a guitar player that wants to start playing bass, as I've always though it had a great sound and loved the way melody and rhythm were tied together. I do have a question about amps. In guitar, the tube amp is generally considered to be better than solid state, and pros and gigging musicians alike use tube amps.

With bass is this the same way? It seems that Solid-State options abound. I know I am not too familiar with all of the different brands etc,. However, I guess my biggest question is, do a lot of touring musicians and pros use solid state amps for recording and live? If they use tube, is it mostly for the distortion you get, or do users of tubes say they provide a better clean tone? Thanks.
