Another Racism Thread

My only issue with what's been said so far is nobody seems to be placing any accountability on the people who are acting not in accordance with the standards of the community they move in to.

I disagree. In my first or second post, I said that neighborhood groups need to confront new residents and tell them what they expect, and to put pressure on landlords and the police if the new folks don't live up to community standards.

No - what he is saying is

"Why isn't it the new residents duty to discover the community standards and live up to them"?

Why is there ANY onus on the existing residents to bring the new residents up to speed on community standards?

It is the duty of new residents to know the community standards, but in the real world, things just don't always happen the way they should. That is why I say it will take effort to maintain a community when it begins to change.

I see a lot of inconsiderate behavior from all races and all classes and I'm wondering if it's a sign of the times or maybe I'm just living in the wrong era. :D

I've experienced home owners turned landlords diminish the quality of life of everyone in the neighborhood by renting to folks that for whatever reason just don't know how to act. The notion of making money just blinds them from seeing the results of their actions as if their property is isolated from the rest of the community.

For renters, I would put the onus on the landlord.

For buyers, it would be more of the neighbors letting them know about the HOA, getting them a copy of it, and offering to help with any questions.

Last month, some people bought a house a few houses down from me and they have this grimey puke green RV from like 1914 sitting in the driveway, which is a violation of our HOA. I'll give them a few more weeks to get it out of street view, or I'm going over there with the HOA in hand. Well, I'll probably have someone from our HOA board do it. I won't be nice about it. :D

I suspect Home Owners Associations are not much of a factor. They are not very common in the Detroit area. Perhaps its because the area is littered with small towns that have their own rules and school systems etc. While you may see a few in newer subdivisions developments, they are almost non existent in the Detroit area older inner ring suburbs. One other thing that's common in the area is because of the cold climate and the long commutes unless you have kids in common schools the odds of you knowing your neighbors real well is not that normal either.

Well here's a (non racial) example that I can use because I lived it - I recently moved to my new location due in large part to the fact that my old house was situated in a neighborhood with a large number of college-rental houses. there was one right next door to me.
At first I didn't mind it, but after a while it became so exceedingly frustrating that I can't even begin to describe it - parties at all odd hours of the night and morning, garbage/beer cans all over the lawns...this went on for as long as I lived next door. I approached them nicely to no avail, I tried to reason with them to no avail, I resorted to screaming at them to no avail, I called the police to no avail, I contacted their landlord to no avail, so what's left? Live with it or leave....

IMO, there's a definite two-part responsibility here - the landlords are absolutely responsible for who they rent to and the behavior of their tenants, and the tenants have the absolute responsibility to behave in a manner that does not ostracize them from the local community and impact the quality of life of the folks who live there.
While this doesn't translate perfectly to the situation in the OP, I'm just throwing it out there to illustrate the my belief that responsibility is on several sides of the issue, not just one.

No HOA where I live. The homeowner should let the renters know the community standards but what I'm seeing is that when she shows up, they are on their best behavior and all hell breaks loose when she's not around. In fact when I first called the homeowner, she didn't believe what I was telling her! My word against theirs! She happened to call me last week to ask me if there was an improvement. I told her there was although there is a lot of people coming and going from the residence. She said she asked who was actually living there and of course they'll tell her what she wants to hear. She needs to have the place surveiled. If that was my home, I'd be doing a drive-by daily! Gotta tell you, their parties were way outta control. Ending at 3am and one time it seemed at least 100 people exited the house. Mind you, this is a 1400 sq.ft. Ranch style. Had people walking across my lawn, parking in front of my house. My drummer lives across the street and he said he caught a guy peeing by his car. He said he actually went and talked to the renters. I found empty beer cans on my lawn! But I'm not about confronting folks especially when I'm pissed. I suspect these people are drug dealers and like I mentioned previously, one night someone was shooting a gun! We heard 5 shots and me and the wife hit the floor! Crazy! Way to bring down the neighborhood!
